In this video, I walked through my full music production process in Bitwig Studio, from starting with a drone pad to building a complete melodic track. I explained my sound design choices, how I layer elements, and some creative techniques I use to shape the overall vibe of the track.
Tempo Setup & Vision:
Started at 85 BPM for a chill, melodic vibe.
Flexible enough to switch to drum & bass since it’s half of 170 BPM.
Drone Pad Foundation:
Used Polymer with a sine wave for a static root note.
Added Supermassive Reverb and PaulXStretch for a lush, evolving pad.
EQ'd out low frequencies for clarity.
Arpeggio Creation:
Used Stepwise with D# minor scale preset.
Tweaked Polymer with unison and monophonic mode to avoid overlapping notes.
Delay 4 added with custom feedback chains for a more complex delay effect.
Polymer Bass Patch:
Sine & Detuned Saw Waves for a full low-end presence.
Sidechained with Tool Device for ducking under the kick.
Used Auto Level Preset for consistent loudness and dynamic control.
Kick Drum:
Simple breakbeat style pattern with probability adjustments for variation.
Sidechained the bass with Tool Device for cleaner low-end.
Hi-Hats & Percussion:
Used Bitwig's Hats Device with step modulation for rhythmic variation.
Layered multiple claps and added reverb for depth.
Added XO for randomized percussion layers.
Lead Design:
Polymer with a resonant filter and audio-rate modulation for a brass-like texture.
Heavy reverb and pitch modulation for a spacey, melodic feel.
Melodic Approach:
Played live MIDI instead of programming.
Focused on pentatonic scales with sparse note placement for emotional impact.
EQ: Cut excess mids to avoid buildup from multiple layers.
Dynamic Control: Used Auto Leveling and Multiband Compression for balance.
Reverb & Delay: Carefully managed wet signals using chains for better control.
Grouped Drums: Applied subtle compression for a tighter sound.
Master Bus: Applied multiband compression for dynamic balance and clipper for loudness control.
Start with a drone pad to establish the root.
Keep melodic elements simple and use live recording for more natural results.
Use sidechain compression to balance bass and kick.
Focus on sound design layers for depth and atmosphere.
