Looking for suggestions

Hey, everyone! I'm heading out next week for a video shoot with my longbow, and I’d love to hear your suggestions! What would you like to see or hear about archery? Whether it’s technique, historical facts, or specific longbow stories, let me know! Looking forward to your ideas & will do my best to accommodate them.

I did a brief one about shooting two arrows at once again, and capturing where they landed. We also did an interesting one on some common misconceptions and myths about medieval archery

Kevin Hicks

- Legendary stories of archery feats or, - You doing longbow trick shots

Ashley Chadwick

I'm curious about the makeup of large numbers of bowmen on campaign. Were there regional differences within Britain that could identify where a Bowman came from? Like type of wood or shape of the bow or arrow shaft, hand position, training style, shooting stance, etc?

Sarah Arehart

All duly noted Marco, thanks!!

Kevin Hicks

As Tod from Tod's workshop experiments have already shown that middle class armour was effective against direct hits, but e.g. chain mail and Gambeson would not stop a mailbreaking arrow, I think we can leave this topic very much aside. Arrows hitting less protected areas were a massive threat, indeed. And I believe more in aimed shots than in raining down precious ammunition all the time (personally I think a combination of both, as else Clout shooting would make no sense). What I find more interesting is e.g. how is the height of the average man (determining usually the max. drawlength) related to length of the bow. Drawing to the ear, what is the best way of aiming, or do I shoot completely instinctively. Shooting at the stake- what distance for beginners? How to overcome the problem with arrow spine and Archers paradox in a battle context where you will not have the "perfect" Arrow for you and your bow, but want to hit your target at closer ranges precisely to make use of the weak spots in armour. lol, a lot of questions.

Marco Engelbracht

I'm sure someone else has already said this, but I'd love to see the true range of the bow itself. Media presents the English Longbowmen as being histories first "artillery" but it would be awesome to see the full range

Zachary McMickens

Recently, scholars have challenged the traditional locations of the battlefields of both Crécy and Agincourt. I was wondering if you have heard this and, if so, if you had any thoughts? Thank you so much as always!

Bryan W. Hernandez

Technique would be a great video. From hand position on the string to anchor points and aiming.

Martin Hands

Hey Pieter, I think some of this was covered in a video a while back https://youtu.be/BAZ9oNJRq-Y but I may include it again when I film this next round of videos. 👍

Kevin Hicks

Are womens long bows more flexible then the mens? What kind of string do you need to use for the bows? Do bows have to me measured to hight of a person or just strength?

alyssa johnson

I was thinking about shooting for distance and trajectory.

Mike and Amy James

How the development of armour from the beginning of the hundred years war to the later stages began to impact the tactical effectiveness of the English longbow. I have read the introduction of plate armour diminished it's capabilities for those that could afford to be equipped with it, but I would love to see this representative in your videos.

If you get into personal stories, how about your favorite friendly rivalry?

Tyler Thornton

I am interested in tactics. How were’teams’ lined up and used in a battle on field and was there ever a guerilla type archery form in forests especially the long bow seems to be designed fir that. Loooong shots. Also who supplied the bows and arrows in a war

Rena

It's all very well standing in a bare field, shooting straight at a target. But we know in real battles, the archers would always aim high, and rain down the arrows over the top of friendly units, and over the shield wall. Sometimes, by the time the arrow had reached the target, a horse or something would get in the way. Oops. Archers had to do that whilst hiding in woods, hanging from trees, leaning out of windows, and riding on horse back. So archery the sport is quite a bit different from the historical battles. I'd like to see more behind the right ear camera shots, so we can see the flight path from release to target. Any kind of wind sock, or even a real sock, to show the wind might help?

Daniel Waddington

How many arrows did the average archer carry? How were they replenished in the heat of battle? Did someone collect the shot ones for reuse?

Zeke Blackwell

*History question: How far back in world history does the bow & arrow go? Do we know its beginnings?🏹 *Odd question: The bow and arrow have been used for centuries in too many places and eras to count. Is there a civilization or society where we WOULDN'T find this pair?? *Thank you, Kevin, for being such a sweet guy and letting us get involved by participating in your polls and Q&A's. It's fun!🎯

Cindy Stott

Good questions! I've wondered the same things.🙂

Cindy Stott

Well. Could you tell something about how archers were trained and how many years it took to train a boy into a fully able archer? And what were the butts actually. How did they train?

Pieter Batenburg

All great questions so far, keep them coming! 👍

Kevin Hicks

We've looked a lot at war bows and how bowmen were used in battle, but I'm curious on hunting bows, hunting techniques, and the forest law that included a lot of regulations on bows and other equipment.

Jodie Giacalone

Do you mean splitting an arrow or shooting two from the bow?

Kevin Hicks

Perfect!

Kevin Hicks

If there’s any interest, a not too detailed history of the bow. How was it introduced to western civilization. Was it in England during prehistoric times? We see the technology all across the globe, Africa, Asia. What about North America? Curiosity.

Susan Hayden

How many extra bowstrings would a Bowman carry? Do different shaped bodkins have different aerodynamic properties to take into account when firing? How heavy would a Bowman's kit be to carry around? Would rain and snow be merely a discomfort, or a deal-breaker for archers' effectiveness?

Sarah Arehart

Anything about longbows is fascinating and appreciated 👍🙏

Stephanie Walker

Always wondered can you use any feathers as the fletchings?(Sorry if I got the name wrong). What feathers where the best and worst to use..if you where Rich(I'm not talking about my self here) could you use say pheasant/peacock feathers to show off your wealth?. Also why not use leather like they did on crossbow bolts(dirty word I know...sorry keV) in some cases

Richard Macpherson

Robin Hooding an arrow…some say it can not be done, with broad heads at close range maybe?

Gary T

Oh wow I'll have a few questions! I'll have to make a list and let you know soon!! Thanks!

alyssa johnson

How does shooting upwind or downwind affect the range and accuracy of your bow? Did wind direction inform how medieval commanders positioned their archers?
