Tiax's Betrayal

As the party prepares for their journey into the deepest layer of the Nine Hells, Tiaxโ€”one of Koh Tamโ€™s trusted crewโ€”makes his move. He is no longer willing to share the spoils or tolerate Koh Tamโ€™s leadership. With his two loyal allies at his side, Tiax confronts the characters, forcing a critical decision that could shape the course of their journey.

How did your players deal with Tiax along the way? How do you make his offer a bit more enticing for your party?

Tiax's Betrayal

Comments

I changed Tiax's betrayal entirely. The party had a great time partying with Tiax in Abriymoch. He quickly became a favorite NPC. One of my players later made a secret deal with Asmodeus, who commanded him to kill Tiax on the Infernal Warship. Everyone is wrecked, and a betrayal still looms.

Absolutely Not Jeff

Tiax's betrayal is how I plan to make the ending more interesting. I am making Tiax not just "favored" by Cyric, but actually one of his chosen (Forgotten Realms lore thing, basically a god's chief servant who directly wields some of their divine power). In my version, Cyric has long coveted Asmodeus's throne as the commander of legions of professional liars and has tried many times in the past to usurp him. His latest scheme is using the party to get his chosen to the 9th layer to assassinate Asmo so Cyric can take his place. Tiax has an alternate, way more powerful stat block that he has been holding back and not using to conceal the fact that he is Cyric's chosen. Unfortunately for Cyric, Asmo has thought about every conceivable thing Cyric could try to do to usurp him (as Asmo does) and prepared contingencies for each one; while Cyric thinks he is using the party, the party is in fact Asmo's first contingency for plan "have my chosen assassinate Asmo"; he pulled the strings to bring them together all along so they would forge themselves into powerful warriors in the fires of his domain. He wants to send a message to Cyric to give tf up already by having regular mortals defeat his divinely gifted chosen without Asmo himself lifting a finger, and that will be the offer he presents to them at the end in exchange for what they want.
