"Jacob studied the iron graveyard, where every vehicle was its own gravestone. He drove slowly through, as if he was afraid to wake the dead. That was not it though. The general made it clear that they should fear the living.”
― Dean F. Wilson, Worldwaker
Welcome to the Junkyard!
As the hot summer sun beat down, I found myself drawn to an old abandoned junkyard just outside of town. Piles of rusting metal and machinery as far as the eye could see - it was like a post-apocalyptic landscape frozen in time.
I stepped through the rusty gates and entered the twisted domain. Everywhere I looked, the remnants of civilization's castoffs seemed to take on a malevolent life of their own. Old washing machines and fridges watched my every move with sightless eyes. A half-buried muscle car seemed poised to lunge out at me from its dusty grave. The snapping and groaning of warping metal made me jump at every sound.
Deeper and deeper I wandered, trying to ignore the growing sense of being watched. And then, as the sun slipped below the jagged skyline, the shadows consumed me. I realized with dread that I was utterly and hopelessly lost in this maze of decaying artifacts.
As darkness fell, the junkyard seemed to come alive with unearthly movements and noises on every side. I broke into a shambling run, heart pounding in my ears as unseen things gave chase. Would I escape this twisted domain of metal and madness, or be lost here forever in the belly of the beast? The shadows crept closer, threatening to drag me into the depths among the ruins of our civilization's castoffs.
