Post Questions HERE for Tomorrow's Live Q+A!

Hey folks! I'll be going live tomorrow morning (Saturday, Nov 2nd) at 10AM CT to answer your musical questions. Post them here and I'll answer them in the order that they're received.

If you're new in town, here's a few things to note:

-If your question involves a published song, please include a link to a YouTube or Spotify version

-If you're asking about your own music, please send an MP3 and/or charts to my email, signalsmusicjake@gmail.com

-If your question doesn't appear on Patreon or a link gets removed, email me directly! This site does goofy things like that sometimes.

I'll post the link one hour before broadcast begins -the stream will be available afterwards for viewing, but if you're logged in live you're welcome to ask questions after Ive made it through all the ones posted here.

Fire away!

Hey Jake, sorry if I'm too late, but do you have any tips for guitar playing to avoid fretting wrist pain? It feels like a big blocker to my practicing

Hi Jake. I am finally writing music and have kind of broken out of my writer's block, mainly because I got an audio interface and I can record myself play. I have 3 very simple questions: 1. How to go about chaining audio effects on tracks? Which effects should go first and which should go second. How do you decide that for your own tracks. 2. I need to buy a pair of headphones but currently I can only afford one. Would you recommend closed-back or open-back or semi-closed? 3. Recommendations for rock drum samples? Thank you for always being an inspiration!

Hey Jake! For the past few months I've been listening to Magdalena Bay's new album "Imaginal Disk". Like a lot of other people I really enjoy it. So much so that I've analyzed some of the music. I'm very curious what your take is on the harmony of the intro and verses to their song "Image", and your take on MY takes. The harmony is really unique. Here is a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfcWOPpmw14 My (by ear) transcription of the verse melody I made with Logic Pro: https://imgur.com/a/ftWxnCM INTRO: Em7 | % | % | % | Dm7 | % | Fm7 | % | VERSE: Fm7 | Dm7 | Em7 | % | Fm7 | Gm7 | Am7 | % | (x2) (verse as Roman Numerals in C): iv(m7) | ii(m7) | iii(m7) | % | iv(m7) | v(m7) | vi(m7) | % | (x2) CHORUS (C aeolian): i-i-i-v | iv-iv-iv-v | iv-iv-iv-v | iv-iv-v-v (x6) Symbol Meanings: - "|" divides measures. - "-" divides beats. - "%" means repeat the chord from the previous measure. ANALYSIS NOTES: - The arpeggiated synth was clearly made with a sequencer to sound computerized. It's hard for me to tell exactly what notes are playing, but I'm pretty sure it's just a m7 arpeggio. The chords are changed by simply pitching every note in the chord up or down by the same amount. I suspect that's how these sections of the song were written, and why the harmony is so unique. - I noticed the melody briefly hits chord extensions like a b9 over Dm7, or a b6 over Em7. I wasn't sure if I should think of these as passing notes, or as truly part of the harmony (making the Em7 a Em7(b13), for example). VIEWED AS C MINOR: - If we look at the verses as being C minor, the home chord is never played as a minor OR major chord, but there are borrowed chords and notes from major. VIEWED AS C MAJOR: - We could view C major being the true key, but I think the melody hits Eb too definitively to sound major to my ears. The non-diatonic chords also go beyond sounding borrowed- they destabilize any Major vibes. VIEWED AS MAJOR & MINOR (chromatic mediants) - We could view the song as a combination of C major and C minor- a progression that leverages chromatic mediants in C to create an off-kilter feeling, all while never touching the home chord. VIEWED AS HAVING NO KEY: - We could view it as not having a key at all- It's just going from m7 chord to m7 chord. ALTERNATE PERSPECTIVES: …I could always be missing something obvious! I could maybe see analyzing the chords in F or F minor, but they would still be just as non-diatonic as C. The melody doesn't seem to support F, either...

Hi Jake, I'm working on my playing and singing/talking at the same time, noticing that you have developed that skill really well I've got to ask; how on earth do you do it? + what are your tips for dialing that skill in? Thanks as always :)

HI, MR. LIZZIO! Hope you had a good Halloween! What would you say are some good music genres to practice when it comes to learning music? Every genre has its strength, but are there any in particular you find better for learning?

Captain Byte

Hi Jake , how should I learn to play music with swing ? And how would you use swing in a genre other jazz ? For example in metal music .

Hey Jake! I watched my first one of your song writing videos last week. Every time, you started with a lick. Is that the way you always do it? Do you, maybe, sometimes start with a cool chord progression, an infectious drum beat, lyrics, or something else to draw the inspiration from? If so, is your method of building the song any different depending on your starting point? Thanks!

As a lefty , I’ve always struggled reading TAB, scales etc. I can’t find any resources for left hand specific written instructions that really help , any suggestions ?
