A little late to the party here but I agree with most of your criticisms. But I think most of them are the fault of the script writer and director. The book actually handles things a lot better as cliche as that sounds. For example the gay bashing part. In the book all those guys are actually brought to justice and there is a whole chapter about them in the interrogation room.
