Comments

Most of the comments have been discussing Nate's character arc, but I also think this episode is crucial for showing why so many people see a "love triangle" with Keeley/Roy/Jamie that isn't actually there: The audience all make the same mistake that Nate himself did here. Yes, Keeley has been seen looking at Jamie, and she's offered him emotional support previously, but she's done the same with multiple other people as well because she's friendly, and supportive, and also because it is literally part of her job at Richmond. But because she and Jamie used to date, people think it means that she's interested in getting back together with him. Here, because she compliments Nate, and spends time with him, and stands close to him, Nate thinks she's interested in him romantically/sexually. She hasn't actually DONE anything with Jamie. She hasn't confided in Rebecca that she regrets breaking up with Jamie, or begun pulling away from Roy in their relationship, or even been seen looking at Jamie's publicity photos in her off time (Like you once thought she would do at the start of the season and be discovered masturbating by Roy). She's just been a friendly, professional ex-girlfriend with him. And that's been mistaken as growing (or resuming) attraction.

I stopped caring for Nate when he was gonna get the promotion and they were surprising him and he went off on Rebecca like that. That was a huge red flag even if he thought he was gonna lose his job. After that his behavior just made sense to me. Having daddy issues is a crazy thing. Great reaction

Nate should have had sessions with Dr Sharon before she left, he’s one of the ones who need it the most.

Marcus

Ted doesn’t hate goodbyes, it’s more that he hates being left by people without them saying goodbye. At least that’s how I took it. Fear of abandonment is a difficult fear to get over.

Oddly enough, I used to live in Royston when I lived over there!

I don't think agree with you that that's a fair comparison. Im Brazilian living in the states, if I move to Equador to work closer to home that would literally be closer to home, geographically , culturally and even language wise. Now I can't speak for how close or different Morocco and Nigeria are, but I am willing to bet that however different than Nigeria Morocco may be, it's still more familiar to Sam than England. Prob like Equador would be to me, even tho it's NOTHING like Brazil. Still, as a South American country it's more familiar than the USA. But your comparission of an American going to El Salvador...? That is the one that makes no sense. It's just not the same thing bro. You just can't deny that Morocco is closer to Nigeria and therefore in a way Sam would be closer to home than in England. Unlike ted being in El Salvador to be closer to home. Your comparison doesn't work because your criticism doesn't hold water.

Lindinha

The catch is that it is ridiculous, Sam going to Morocco to be closer to home is like Ted going to coach a club in El Salvador to be closer to home.

justin

Yeah, I mean, Oak makes a face because Mason doesn't know who Banksy is and yet he falls for the joke.

Lindinha

I disagree that he was mean in that scene.

Regarding all of the signs that this wasn’t out of the blue for Nate: Nick Mohammad, after season two had fully come out, went on Twitter and posted a bullet point breakdown of every sign and microaggression that built to this turn.

Oak - I think you missed that "Wonder Kid" came from Nate himself, and not from the reporters. He said it in a live interview (he meant wunderkind), and the papers just took what he said. The problem for Nate is that he made an error and now it's been hung around his neck in public. As another commenter points out - Nate has *always* been a bit mean and power-hungry. All through first season, there were plenty of moments where Nate was not a good or nice person, but it's easy to ignore because he's played as a comic character in S1 for the most part. That Ted-endorsed speech he gave to the team before the game in Liverpool was borderline *cruel* to some of the players--but again, played for comedy. The only reason we're seeing this side of him in S2 is yes, because he's been given a taste of power and everything has come rushing to the fore. (And yes, this is a show about how fathers shape sons, you're not wrong there. Nate is another example of hurt people hurt people.)

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I read in a comment, somewhere, when these episodes were new, and Nate's character turn was in full swing, that Nate was always this kind of man, he just never had any real power to do anything with it. In the very first episode, he yells at Ted and Coach Beard to get off the grass. As soon as he knew they were senior to his position, he did a full 180 and couldn't have been any more diminutive. Now he's been given power, and he's even turned on the guy who gave him it.

Also: that's not ACTUALLY Banksy, it's just a joke for the show making him seem like the most unassuming middle aged white British dude.

Jumping in for the obligatory, "Sam Obisanya was actually named for the actor Sam Richardson, who plays Edwin Akufo in this episode, and Sam's puppy dog personality was modeled after Sam Richardson's real-life personality" comment. (It's true, though; the creators have said that Sam's non-football side is based largely on him... the football/activist side is based on multiple people, but Marcus Rashford is the biggest, most recognizable one. Rashford is an English footballer who's famously a big social activist, as well.)
