I’ve finally come around to watching this film + reaction and wow, there’s so many layers to peel back. The fact that Remmick clearly held contempt for the English who colonized his people…the fact that he understood the similarities in struggle between him and AA folks…the fact he called out the abuse + oppression of AA people; “They gon' take it from you when they want” yet did the same thing to the Juke Joint (and therefore being another oppressor). On another topic, Remmick is one smart cookie. He 100% percent knew to switch up his tune (lol) when he saw those klan hoods in the back. He knew those folks would eat his victimization right up. Especially when he said; “They took my wife!”. A line which I don’t think was a coincidence. The klan is historically notorious for sympathizing with white women (especially during that period) as it offered them gateways to reinforce their racist beliefs. Though back on topic, when Remmick first arrived at the joint with one klan member on each arm he knew to be as vague as possible in his explanations when prodded; “Can’t we just for one night all be family” or AKA “I don’t see color”. Very nice commentary on Ryan’s behalf if intended, and something that makes sense considering Remmick also overtly represents white privilege. He knows when and how to use it as a tool—from bringing members of the kkk to the joint, to how he violated Grace through Bo. Remmick wasn’t unaware of the system he was in at all, on the contrary he's well versed in it; so he knew how to weaponize it against everyone. Remmick also definitely saw vampirism as a way for them to escape oppression, when that just wasn’t true. Especially not for Black people residing in Mississippi during that era. When I reflect more on this films central theme, it starts to become; “be careful who you let in your community”, instead of “trying to find community”—mainly for the fact that Remmick had no one’s best interest except his own. Which was using Sammies gift of blues for his own desires, whether Sammie wanted it or not—alongside the fact he specifically targeted the storytellers and musicians of the community. By doing that, he created the very antithesis of community. For as we all know it’s predominantly the loss of elders and culture that destroy community. To end this, I find that one of the saddest parts of all this is that Remmick genuinely believed he could help “elevate” them from their oppression, and thus create an environment for them that’s “above color”. It was so delusional. PS: Remmick and CO sounded like evil hippies 😆 Peace and Love they say with human viscera in their teeth, LOL! Really enjoyed your guys’ reaction to this + the commentary after!

just briefly cuz you discussed it.... the idea that vampires need to be invited to get it is not always the case. it is in this movie and its popular trope in much of modern media and it was there case of Dracula for example. but it's not like that in every vampire lore. there are many variations and it depends from author to author, book to book, movie to movie.... the idea came from the metaphor that we need to invite evil into our lives ourselves. but it's not like that in every IP. for example Anne Rice's vampires don't need an invitation to get it than can get in anywhere they want normally. they are also not affected by crosses or anything religious, in fact main of them still have same religious believes they did in life. they also have normal reflection in the mirror. there are other movies where they can come in on their own too. so it differed in different stories it's not always a set rule like in this movie.

Another unique thriller that came out recently is Oddity. It’s of the best movies I’ve seen in awhile

Just as a side note (idk if anyone has mentioned it) but based on the gold coins Remmick had and the timeline he gave of the forced Catholic conversion, Remmick is at least 1000 years old. He’s a very old vampire and Sammie was his way to be with his people again. It’s also genius to make him Irish because the Irish (as far as I remember) shared a similar history to black people’s history. I really enjoyed this movie and I fucking had Rocky Road to Dublin stuck in my damn head for a week.

This was weird for me,i loved it but also kept feeling this sense of this is just really weird. They even did the "from dusk til dawn" style, where the first hour is its own movie, then it splits into a whacky vampire twist. Which was also somewhat a musical lol I enjoyed it all except a few scenes, but part of me would really like to have seen these characters without the vampire aspect. i was really interested by the twins dynamic and the relationships they had. The more i think about it,feels like they really made this movie in tribute to from dusk til dawn,or atleast was the major inspiration for this. Main characters were brothers, one being level headed and rational..the other a violent hothead and a little whacky..hold up in a small bulding during a party and have to survive the night against vampires. They clearly drew alot from that. But that being said,it was a great entertaining movie and the whole cast delivered.

Diamond Dave! Yes, Remmick fully believed what he was saying. And honestly, during that time period, his speech probably would've worked on me too. The way he talked about freedom—being able to live without fear of hate or discrimination—was powerful. That message hit, especially if you were already feeling isolated. Now Oak was right—Remmick wanted Sammie to connect with his Irish ancestors. However, remember what Annie said? When you become a vampire, you're cut off from your ancestral line. So there's a theory that even if Remmick had managed to get Sammie to “reconnect,” it wouldn't have actually worked. Also, Some people even believe—or theorize—that Remmick used to have that ancestral connection too, before he turned. Like, maybe he once had the same kind of spiritual gift Sammie did, and lost it. And I know some of y’all were confused about Mary. It’s because she had just lost her mother. She was grieving hard and clung to the idea of turning her whole “family” into vampires so she’d never lose anyone again. So when Annie got stabbed, it broke the emotional link in the hive mind. Mary felt that disconnection like heartbreak. That’s why it devastated her when Smoke stabbed her—she really believed she was building a version of heaven on earth, where all her loved ones could be together forever.

Incredible movie! There's so many details you can go through with every watch. Fun fact, director Ryan Coogler consulted with Christopher Nolan on how to really utilize large-format photography on film, which is why they were really pushing people to see it in IMAX (The Dark Knight was the first movie RC watched in IMAX). From a visual standpoint this film is gorgeous and it just enhanced the already amazingly layered storytelling. Great reaction!

I love how during the “ritual” dance scene, you see the vampires appear. The Irish vampire wants Sammie because he saw him pierce the veil to his ancestors. He wanted to have that power from Sammie.
