Thank you for the explanation! I still have a follow-up question: if it’s not mainly about status, why does Kang consistently call Park 사모님 (samonim)? I get that Kang is mainly putting on an act here, but doesn’t that still show something real about Korean hierarchy? Like, the fact that she can “act” that way and it makes sense to viewers shows the dynamic already exists — where an older woman of lower status would use something like 사모님 (samonim) for a younger, higher-status woman. Otherwise her pretending wouldn’t really work.

As a Korean speaker, I don't know why there are comments linking the scenes with Kang and Park to things like status. Why is Park rude to Kang, and why is Kang polite to Park? The answer is simple: Because Park is a bad person, and Kang humbles herself as much as possible to deceive Park. From my experience in Korean society, sensible and polite people do not act informally with strangers regardless of age or status. Sometimes older people act informally with younger people. But this is not common and if it does happen, it is likely to be considered rude unless the two people are related by blood or have a close relationship. Some Koreans are generous with foreigners who use informal expressions, but it would be wise not to misinterpret this as a special favor or something to be taken for granted. The reason they do so is simply because, like most countries, expectations for foreigners are lower than those for their own citizens. In a similar vein, some people who watch foreign dramas easily think "Oh, the culture is different over there." when they see something they don't understand. Of course there may be cultural differences, but most of the time it's because of the following reasons. 1) The writer is not good at writing. 2) There's something wrong with the writer. 3) The translation is weird. 4) Lack of observation, memory, or comprehension. 5) A combination of all four. So if you're watching a foreign drama or movie and there's something that doesn't make sense to you, don't try to figure out what's wrong with that society, just enjoy the work itself. I hope the scene where Kang tells her daughter, “You should go to high school in the U.S., become a cheerleader and date a football player," will be helpful. If you've read this long comment, you've probably noticed that I'm not an English speaker. So I'd appreciate it if you could understand the awkwardness in my comments generously.

noertap

She's gross on a whole other level 🤮

Aria Isara

Yeah in a way she's even worse than Yeon Jin who is at least nice with her daughter 😩

Aria Isara

👍🏻 Was looking for this comment. The date is the key, not so much about the camera. lol when Badd Medicine imagining way too much and talking about their time in the changing room. That’s funny🤣🤣

WHY

We were predicting Yeon Jin the previous episodes.

Badd Medicine

I hate her mother so much. I'm like, did she color her hair orange to up her crazy? Or did she finally have the money for clown hair thanks to Yeon Jin?

Megan

I don't think it registered for you guys, but we found out before the actual killing, that Yeon Jin killed him. In the dressing room, the worker tells us Yeon Jin asked her to delete everything up to and specifically including October 19th. We see the files begin on the 20th when Jae Joon is scrolling through the camera feeds. Then we find out from the detective that Yeo Jeong was Myeong Oh's final phone call on October 19th. Then we see the killing.

Megan

Can’t wait for you guys to see more of Sa-ra lmao she’s a crazy one

S Kim

Wealth is power. It’s not even easy to buy unless you have a huge spending history with them. And you can’t just get it on the spot.. there’s a waiting list. He’s gotta be one of their top customers to buy it on the spot like that.

S Kim

Main character’s mom honestly the worst! She really scare me and disgust at the same time’ And I looooove anesthesia scene 🔥🔥🔥 The doc really hot when help with Dong-Eun’s revenge!

Vlad Lena

Dongeun's mom is the worst ever. Not a maternal bone in her body. She's what Americans call "white trash" to say it kindly.

Nellie Z

I think you guys might’ve slightly misinterpreted something. There were never any actual cameras IN the changing room. Just in the store and outside the change room. The worker at the store was basically telling Jaejun that “yea we usually delete them every 30 days but I reformatted it to delete the 19th” and he asked “why did you do that” and she said because Yeonjin asked her to. So then he goes looking at the dates on the files and does in fact notice that the security footage from October 19 was no longer there. It had nothing to do with Jaejun and Yeonjin’s time in the change room. I don’t think Yeonjin would be doing that in a room she knows has cameras lol. She cares to much about her image for that (well not too much seeing as she is having an affair to begin with💀)

Fiyin Cole

Remember, that bag Yeon~Jin’s husband bought like trinket is $20k. #baller

Harlee

You are right and I also think it's like a power trip saying

Nellie Z

I only started watching this cuz of u guys and now I can’t stop!!!! I hope u guys have blue eye samauri on ur list ! Another great revenge story

Lily

I believe the significance of myeongo telling yeonjin that one minute was up was a callback to yeonjin saying at the start of their convo that he had only one minute to talk to her. It was a sort of mocking statement hence why she snapped. Someone correct me if I’m wrong though!

ct

So freaking good this drama!

pls_ultra

Lmaoo

Mo

I’ll tell you what, Yeon-Jin may be the main villain, but Dong-eun’s mom rivals Dolores Umbridge in the category of despicable characters. She’s the worst.

Lauren

i'm tweaking like sa-ra for the next episode!! great reaction as always

cait

007 never worked for Yeon-Jin. She worked for the chairman of the elementary school. Am I misunderstanding the characters you’re referring to?

Infinite Ree

A detail that non-Korean speakers miss is that 007 speaks in formal/very polite speech to Park while Park speaks informally and pretty much rude to her. 007 is the older one, so Park should speak to her formally, not the other way around. It just goes to show Park’s effect and the role that social status/financial status plays in these dynamics.

So excited to dive in after Mulan :D
