I feel like we got so used to every show having some kind of antagonist or villain that when watching this series we automaticaly try to find one in every person. That first opening scene of 1 ep sets a very distinct tone for the whole show and i think it gives kind of a wrong vibe of the whole series. Cause then we get introduced to the orphanage and we immidietly think whos gonna be the bad guy, whos gonna hurt her. And then they don't. The staff was competent and kind to the girls and i really think they tried their best. They couldv'e made Mr. Shaibel real creepy but he comes of as a very warm person and the creepy factor is just setting - ie the basement. Beth gets adopted and we again start to thiink whos gonna be the bad guy. And then nothing really happens. Mr Wheatley is a trash man but more so towards his wife. And Alma is just a very depressed woman living in the 50s. We get to the tournament and first reaction is they guys are gonna be crap towards Beth. And then they are not. In this series there is no real stereotypical bad guy. I feel like it keeps us kinda in suspense and in anxiety mostly due to music and tone and visualls. The actual story is very hearwarmign in actuality. Yes Beth has her problems but its more due to her later life style and habits AND stil she has a lot of people around her who help her. (Trying not to spoil anything is kinda hard) It kinda show a a semi regular life of a semi regular girl in the 50s and 60s. Cant wait for your guys' reactions for the later episodes. They get a bit wild for a moment.

Mr. Shaibel is the real deal.

About the argument of "it was his idea to adopt Beth", one of the first things Mrs Wheatley says to Beth when they enter the house as dog barkings is heard in the background is that she loves animals and wants a pet but Mr Wheatley is allergic to most pet dander so she's not allowed to have one, so to me he saw Beth more like a pet to entertain his wife more than anything else.

Great discussion! You guys always hit the nail on the head. It’s been awhile since I first watched it (3 times over to be exact when it first came out lol), so it’s been so enjoyable doing this rewatch! Two moments that I think are really interesting and can get glossed over with all the other notable parts of this episode: 1) The moment in the library. I know MQ mentioned how weird of an interaction that was, and I completely agree. But I think there’s something to be said about Beth’s journey up until now, and the fact that she’s never witnessed normal relationships between men and women. Seeing how Beth had previously observed the kids at the high school next to the orphanage, and her current situation being adopted by The Wheatley’s and their dynamic, I think she was just doing what she’s always done, which is become the observer from the outside looking in. 2. The moment when Alma tries to encourage her to join the high school social clubs, and Beth asks Alma what she did in her social life at her age. The drop on Alma’s face tells me a number of things, that she either didn’t have much of one, or that perhaps she got pregnant at a young age (pure speculation but possible given how she talks about her lacking role as a housewife/mother and having to give up her dreams). Either way, it seems as though she is trying to give the same encouragements that she might have gotten as a teen or even in her adult life from society and Mr. Wheatley to make sure that Beth doesn’t end up like her. I love how the actress is able to convey in such a quick moment how much that comment affects her, and it really does make you feel for her and the life she’s living.

i love love love the acting in this show. Specially the playing. Without really seeing the board or understanting the moves you can tell everything that is happening. Also who is she playing and what is the game like. I love the sentuality of her game with Towns as she keeps reaching out to him and extending the game. Compered to her match with Beltik staring agresive and cocky where she quickly learns that she can't just underestimate every player. A lesson she needs to learn in her life. Quickly and agressive isn't always the way. God, i LOVE this show hahaha so happy that you guys are watching it.
