Interesting how people interpret the scene of her walking away during the game very differently. IMO the explanation that she had played the game in her head so already knew she won and was just impatient is a logical explanation. But looking at the acting, I think Anya put a bit more in there, there's cockiness and what looks to me like indeed an attempt at impressing her young opponent (not distracting as she is confident in her game, just purely showing herself to be superior, dominating, as she mentioned during the interview).

I'm glad to hear Oak mention the possibility of Beth being on the spectrum! I don't think I've ever thought too much about what Mr. Shaibel said regarding the coin. It makes a lot of sense, though--even her substance abuse issues. From my experience as an autistic individual (as well as what I've heard from other autistic adults), those things may affect us differently. I think it can quiet a lot of the "brain static" we experience as well as provide a sort of sensory damper or buffer that overall makes things less overwhelming. For Beth, I feel like the pills she takes help focus all that extra brain activity on chess, allowing her to clearly visualize the board. Dang, I wish I'd been here to watch the episodes as they dropped!

In terms of longevity, chess is very similar to professional sports; most players peak in their twenties or early thirties, and it is difficult to compete at the highest levels past forty years old. In response to Oak's question about one player dominating for decades, Russian Grandmaster Garry Kasparov was the highest-rated player in the world from 1985 to 2005 and World Champion for most of that time. Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has been the highest-rated player in the world since 2011 and was World Champion from 2013 to 2022. When Carlsen declined to defend his title, the scheduled 2022 World Championship match was delayed until 2023. Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren defeated Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi, taking the title. In 2024, 19-year-old Indian Grandmaster Gukesh D. defeated Ding Liren to become the youngest World Chess Champion in history. Now that the World Championship is back on its regular biannual schedule, Gukesh must defeat a new challenger in a World Championship match in 2026 to retain his title.

Beth indeed was trying to distract when she was getting up from the table. You can even see by the way she was dressed like the actresses from the movies he was talking about.
