2025-09-22 02:24:33 +0000 UTCMany people have said this but this film can be viewed as an allegory for a community dealing with the loss of a group of children after a mass shooting. As humans when we are faced with these kinds of unspeakably horrifying situations we need a monster in order to make sense of it in our heads. We need something to explain why this happened and it's easier to believe there's some witch out there turning good people into bad people rather than facing the fact that it's something inside of them that we as a society have failed to recognise and that is almost always a product of our broken society. A few of these causes are explored as themes in the movie (alcoholism, addiction, child neglect, toxic masculinity, suburban paranoia) Gladys can also be read as being the personification of the NRA, willing to sacrifice the death of a certain number of children in order to maintain their existence. This would make Alex a stand in for a school shooter,
