The best moment in this episode is when Beth sheds a tear during the match against Borgov and his expression change. I'm so impressed with the actor because it's so subtle and that subtly makes it feel so real. I suppose also when you have a character who is so stoned face, subtle expressions mean more. He's surprised to see her cry, like he's seeing her in a different light. Emotional, personal.

Yeah watching the show for a second time it was interesting to see Borgov's face during the match -you can tell he was disappointed and felt bad for Beth. She takes her chess so seriously and she seemed really confident until the day of.. Also Beth still (to me) hasn't had time to mourn Alma. She was put in chess training camp by Beltik and then Benny in NY and then went to Paris. Grief hits you randomly and since she talked about going to Paris with Alma originally I think she was on her mind. Especially when she was talking with Cleo and about how she had nothing to go back to... and then not seeing her mom support her at the tournament... this was a rough one. But great television (lol)!

In my mind I imagine Borgov thinking something like "what are you doing with yourself child...".

I got something different from Borgov's face during the game. Yes, he's been taught to remove all emotion from chess, and yes he remains focused on the board in front of him, but they showed us his wife and little daughter sitting behind him for a reason. This show doesn't do throwaway shots - they're there to tell us he is raising a daughter. When he sees that she can't win, he is unmoved, but when that tear slips down Beth's face, his expression *does* change. I don't think he was annoyed; I think he was concerned. We have known he considers her to be a formidable opponent, and not someone to take lightly or dismiss, but in that moment - just for that moment - she's just a little girl.
