Every woman should have big brothers like all 4 of you.

Probably my favorite movie of all time! Thank you for the reaction - I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This movie is such a perfect "Unreliable Narrator" example. I love Darren Aronofsky's movies. I think Mother! might be my favorite, but it is so brutal, it isnt for everyone (or probably most people really.) The Whale is another great one.

You guys should definitely watch The Piano Teacher (2001). They are similar in many ways and give you the same feelings/experience.

Also one last thing, there are so many visual details I love that they do to depict the Black Swan/other self coming through, like the scene of her in the mirror moving at different times, but my favourite is when Nina bows at the end of her performance as the Black Swan, and she obviously doesn't have wings when they zoom out to show the audience but the two shadows behind her do, representing a full breakthrough into her new self and psyche.

Black Swan is truly one of my favourite psychological thrillers. I first watched this in high school and was completely transfixed (but also disturbed) throughout, and probably only watched it once or twice more since then. But I have to say that rewatching this now as a woman in her 30s hits so, so much more. The themes of striving for perfection and what it can cost, the constant sexualization that women endure and often times become numb to no matter how bold or subtle the innuendos/actions may be, overbearing parents and their desire to project their failures and triumphs through their children as a means to justify their disappointments in life - these are just some of the main themes that really stood out to me this time around. This movie, in my opinion, is perfection. I love the blending of realities and how muddled it gets throughout. At first, you might believe that Lily is trying to sabotage her when they go out, but once Nina finds out that nothing really happened between them back at the apartment, you really start to see her on a downward spiral and eventual transformation into the Black Swan. I love how they showed that in a physical sense to really hammer home how warped her sense of reality had become just to be the prima ballerina. Even though this is just a movie, there are documentaries and movies (the most recent one I watched was ‘The American / Joika’) that depict how intense the world of ballet is, and sadly, the obsession, competitiveness between dancers, eating disorders, imbalance of power dynamics etc are a commonality. Not for all, but certainly some. To me, Lily represents the freedom that Nina strives for in her journey to become the Black Swan. Lily is carefree, while Nina is not due to her extremely sheltered home life and pressure she’s probably had since she was a young girl. And because that freedom is so unfamiliar to Nina, she starts hallucinating and demonizing Lily as someone who’s out to get her, because she herself can’t let go of the perfectionism she’s been conditioned to her whole life. Her final line “I was perfect” is just so heartbreaking because it truly mirrors Odette’s demise, in that she was only able to give the literal performance of her life once she killed her own innocence and self to achieve “freedom” from everything that had been building up inside her. Great reaction as always guys! Really appreciate the in depth discussion and sensitivity to certain themes.

This is Aronofsky working at the height of his powers. The story required a very deft hand and a craftsman's touch and he brought it to life in a way that was raw and visceral and sensual and horrifying (metaphorically and literally). The editing, masterful. The score, sumptuous. The cinematography, awe-inspiring. The performances, stellar (particularly Portman and Cassel). 4.5/5 Answers. I know Quinn mentioned it at the beginning that he has seen Requiem for a dream, but if any of the other guys haven't....oh boy, now that is a disturbing film, and in my humble opinion, Aronofsky's best. Oh and the creepy guy, Oak, is Vincent Cassel, one of the great french actors. If you want to see the most distubing film ever, watch Irréversible.

I suggest you also watch the japanese animated movie that inspired Black Swan, it's called Perfect Blue (1997)

as far as Lilly goes, most interactions, anything that implied rivalry.. was in Nina's head. She had few general real conversations with Lily in the beginning and they went out.. but Nina went home alone, and all other later interactions with Lily or seeing Lily doing sultry stuff were hallucinations. she was also constantly hurting herself, screeching and cutting and nipping her skin in her neurosis, for years probably... and yes she fights with herself in the dressing room and smashes mirror and stabs herself. that was real she was just hallucinating Lily part. and she dies from the would in the end. incredible psychological thriller
