Intrigued... Single print body...

I have a theoretical design for a single print body, would be very interesting as more and more of the 500x500x500 printers are out there in the wild. The height of the body (without skirt) is 491.5mm... Interesting...

I've modified my CR-10 S5 to print up to 1000mm (1m) high, so thinking now about doing the legs as one piece now :)

Several full size layers would be better but like the idea.

For anyone worried about the printer moving the weight about, I'd recommend upgrading the stepper motors, also has the side effect of being way, way quieter and the motors running cooler. These have around twice the grunt of the ones that come with the CR-10 <a href="https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Free-Shipping-1pcs-Stepper-Motor-4-lead-Nema17-48mm-78Oz-in-1-8a-Nema-17-motor/115233_32829487528.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Free-Shipping-1pcs-Stepper-Motor-4-lead-Nema17-48mm-78Oz-in-1-8a-Nema-17-motor/115233_32829487528.html</a>

There isn't a limit really, you just have to slow the print down if it gets really heavy. I have printed a 2.5kg print with no problems at all. I'm happy to test a file if you create one, and report back with settings that worked/didn't work.

Peter Richards

I second the 3 pieces for print, the longer the print the more likely there is something to go wrong.

The file whilst being v2 body has bits of the design missing. It was the first stage and is missing fixings and some of the hinges etc. the bit I’m not sure of, as mentioned in some of the threads, is whether the printer can move the weight of a full body, what’s the maximum weight the CR can shift about and still maintain accurate printing.

You know that just makes me want to do it more :) I was actually about to start on it, so if there is a single piece better version coming I'll hold off, but will definitely print the new one and give feedback once you feel it is ready. I want to give big bertha a proper test, and I can't think of anything better to do it with than a one piece R2 body. :)

Peter Richards

"Wouldn’t recommend it :-)" Why do so many of my projects begin with that advice? :-D Let us know when/if you put that theoretical design up!

That’s a real experimental one, just an export of v2 first design. Wouldn’t recommend it :-)

There is one in the share, but it would be 5 or more rolls of filament, and something like a 10-20 day print. :)

Peter Richards

I run a UPS, so no problems with power outages, plus my printer does resume after a power outage anyway. Most newer printers have filament-out detection and can resume with a filament changeover as well. The main question is the weight, will the printer still behave with 4-6kg on the print bed. Would certainly have to slow the printing down, but I'm ready to try it :)

Peter Richards

you will need to properly calibrate the printer for such a huge print volume and also.. a very big spool of filament with no power outrage. it will be high risk to print as single piece tho. Perhaps 4 piece would be more practical?

Considering doing this myself at some point. In the process of putting together a printer with adequate volume at the moment. Just need some more money to get it finished, lol.

I actually got my CR-10 S5 with the goal of being able to print the dome and body each in one go. I'm testing now to see how reliable the printer is on extended runs. So far, so good, and the dome is teed up and ready. Does the one piece body model already exist?

I love that this exists! Do you think it could be done up in three pieces? This might help manage print times and help reduce support structures? I am looking forward to trying these out when my 500mm x500mm x 500mm printer arrives in a couple weeks.
