New shield in order!

As you already know, we once started with reenactments as 1st century Auxilia soldiers. But over the years we have decided that we also want to do something else. We are also extremely interested in the Roman history of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Especially the period of the Marcomannic Wars between about 166 and 180 AD. The war between the united Germanic tribes of King Ballomar and the famous Stoic Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
(Fun fact: The opening scene of the epic film "Gladiator" by director Ridley Scott, takes place during the Marcomannic war).
In addition to a new Niederbieber helmet and two new spathas (which I will show you guys in another post), we also ordered new shields. Not a typical rectangular Scuta or an oval auxilia shield, but a model that was first introduced in this period and would become a standard model in later centuries. The shields are round or slightly oval and around 1.20 cm high. But the sizes of this type of shield can vary greatly. Unique to this shield type is that they are hollow, like a bowl. This hollow form protected the soldier better, just like with the well-known scuta shape. As with other Roman shields, linen was stretched over the wood.
The shields are currently on their way to The Netherlands and we can't wait until we can paint them! We just haven't decided yet which color and what kind of image or portrait we want to paint on the shields. If you have any good late 2nd, early 3rd century suggestions? Please let us know!
