Tapa Update #4 - I Never Said Flags Need to be Boring

Behind the Scenes
Why the Hell is This Taking so Long? - Writing

Last update I wrote a bit about the difficulty of getting good information for videos. When that's done, there's still a lot of work ahead, though. A list of facts in some random order doesn't do a lot for most people. After gathering the raw material, you gotta lay it out in a way that makes it easy to comprehend and fun to watch. That's the writing part.

To me, good writing is thinking. Turning something over in your head a few hundred times until things click into place in your head and on the page. This process is really messy and takes a long ass time, because it's more than simply ordering things chronologically, then filling the gaps. Before you start ordering things, you gotta have some understanding of what's the core of the thing you're trying to say. You build the whole script around that core to make it feel concise and reach maximum impact. That inevitably means not just reordering but cutting things. Most of the interesting stuff you encounter in the research is never going to show up directly in the writing, but is still absolutely essential to understanding an issue in all its depth and informing the structure of the whole video.

Much of the process is also about how to best convey a specific thing. Sometimes it's best to be as straight as possible, sometimes it takes a little introduction to a problem, and sometimes it's best to write a little skit where characters hash a conflict out before your eyes. Choosing different elements for different circumstances is important to get the point across, but also to keeps the whole video more entertaining and avoids monotone droning along.

Qomments and Cuestions
"I am so happy this didn't devolve into simplifying the flags and making them look like corporate logos"

I've been known, from time to time, to err more on the side of simplicity, especially in questions of flag design. But, while that's certainly so, I do not argue for soulless designs that lack any differentiating factors. The old bi- or tricolors that are still used by many countries are not exactly a stroke of genius designwise, but their simplicity really excels in the distinguishability department. Seeing those flags in their historical context, there's a lot to them, but obviously, nowadays a simple tricolor with no other design elements doesn't cut it anymore. Basically all good three color combos are already taken. Some of them five or six times over. In such an environment, it makes a lot of sense to go with slightly more complexity to make sure people don't mistake one flag for another.

In flag design, there's always a balance to be struck between recognizability - being able to visually grasp a design - and distinguishability - being able to distinguish one design from another. With country flags, where 200 different elements jostle to secure a spot on the flag, simplicity is usually the way to go. Just don't go to far, or that special flag representing that special group becomes a bland thing with all kinds of uses.

Interesting Stuff
The best app to find things - Everything

Every time I tried to find something on my computer I had to type into the Windows search bar, and depending on the mood of the Windows gods at that exact moment, the thing I'd be looking for would show up, or it wouldn't. Even when I knew 100% for sure that that file was on there, it sometimes just wouldn't find it. Lord knows why.

But for years now, that's been a thing of the past for me. Because of Everything.

Everything's a free desktop app that indexes all the things on your computer - or only some of the things, if you want that - and finds them for you in a matter of literal microseconds. Without fail. One thing less to worry about.

I've never really heard anyone else talk about it anywhere, so I wholeheartedly recommend this app to you. It will never fail you.

This is not an ad, by the way. I just love it that much.

That's all from me for now.
Have a good 2025!
