The Order of the Thorne

So we've been working on the second game in The Order of the Thorne, but in doing so - we've decided to make the game we wanted to make, not the game we thought people might want.  With the first OotT, we tried to make a "family friendly" game like King's Quest.  Thing is, though - families don't play adventure games any more.  The people playing our games are grown, mature people - most of them in their 30s,40s and 50s.  Our original intent for OotT was to be a bit more mature - some more conflict with characters, a little more violence and action and the game wasn't so... hand holdy? Is that a word? In the end, we changed direction with OotT and it just didn't work as well. The game has a lot of great bones, but even to me feels stunted.  So when working on FoF, we got to thinking about making a Director's Cut of "The King's Challenge" and give the game a bit of a lift... and make it more like we first intended.  And then we got to thinking we'd probably release one long game "The Order of the Thorne" which has both parts as one long game, as it probably should have been.  In 2016 when we released, episodic games were "the thing" and we were trying to stay relevant instead of true to what we liked.  Well, we learned our lesson.  It may not be profitable, but at least we'll make a game that we like.

I'm excited about, because I wrote a lot of the backstory and lore for OotT and it's an interesting story - my kind of take on Arthurian legend and how it ties into Finn's life and family is cool, I think.  Hopefully we can pull this off and provide a satisfying conclusion, and maybe a new take on the first part for new players and old alike.

I'm good with this. I was seriously disappointed when you all had to cut the scope of OoT from 4 smaller games down to 3 then 2. So I am definitely supportive of revisiting your original vision and hopefully rebuilding a stronger product even if it ends up taking longer. How does the larger game work though? If I recall correctly from the KS campaign each installment was going to have its own protagonist/ego. Will that still be the case with the unified design? Also want to add that I enjoyed King's Challenge as it was released!

I am horrible about playing "new" games (anything made w/i the past 25 years), but I really enjoyed OotT, and it wasn't an overly lengthy game, and it definitely had that friendly King's Quest vibe to it. QfI, of course, is more of a Rated-R version of QFG. ;)
