Update January 29th 2024 - New Year / Same Sean

Howdy friends,
I hope you all had a lovely holiday season and New Year's! 2023 feels so far away already, but that's the ever-marching passage of time for ya!
Anyway, since the last update. I managed to get out Obscure Vol.15, then two weeks later somehow deleted Obscure Vol.15 off my channel (they even put up a big warning that says, 'if you do this, the video will be permanently deleted. are you sure you want to do this?' and I still somehow deleted it) and then reuploaded it again, so that was fun. I also dropped the 2023 PS1 Fan Translation update as well which is always a good time to put together. Some really cool games in that one so definitely check that out if you're looking for some fun Japanese games made recently available in English!
As for the future, the plan is still the same. The early parts of the year are going to be taken up by the Capcom mega project. I'm probably going to hibernate and go radio silent on everything but Patreon while working on that video, because with 70+ games, it's going to need a lot of focus. But I'm very excited to dive in and get started on capturing each title. So many all-timers in this one!
Before that kicks into gear though, we've still got Japan Only Vol.15! Which I'm currently getting started on. The wheel has chosen the four games and just by reputation alone, I think we might be in for an all-timer episode. Four very different games, each one with star potential! So, that should hopefully make for a good watch.
As for smaller updates worth mentioning. I've appeared in another podcast this year. I chatted to the lads from A Link to the Cast about the channel, Robot Wars, Limp Bizkit, and Robbie Williams, so if you're into any of those, it's worth checking out.
(Orla listened to it and said it was good, and she's very hard to please.)
You can find it on Spotify, or on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/AuvoV4RDJUQ?si=fPBDgA5jil0qJZdc
I'm also continuing to slowly update my spreadsheet of every PlayStation game, and I've made it to the letter H in the Japanese library. Over 1000 games in and we've only just made it to H, crazy!
You can check the work in progress here if you like: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1p3rcUuONYK8gh3PSUgBNNs5161-LsxOn9TzVnin2LEI/edit?usp=sharing
Also, it looks like a translation for Germs dropped a couple of days ago. I'm not sure if this is same patch that was announced in 2022 or a different one? But hey it's playable in English finally!
You can check that out here: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7187/
Anyway, that's it from me for now! Thank you all so much for your continued kindness and support and I hope to make 2024 a good year for people who like learning about weird old PlayStation games <3
Much love,
Sean
(Ps. Enjoy the cats)
Something about the footage of Brightis really hit for me. Really seemed like the kind of game I would have wanted on the PS back then - like a missing Sony Zelda. Your vid inspired me to put together a pretty stellar Pi build, one I had been putting off for some time.
I finally finished Brightis today. I played through using Google Translate, which was tedious but not too terribly bad. The translation was sub, but that's to be expected. Took about 13 hours, clear level 23, and skill coins 30/50. The text read 'You have been certified to level 7. Phew, it's finally starting to get hot,' lol. Guess I suck.
You hit on so many of the points of this game already. It really feels like a great first draft. So much potential, but so many things that don't seem to be fully implemented or matter much. The moves/techniques in particular almost feel like they're designed for a different game. My go-to was just the upgraded shield slash, which you get REALLY early on. Also, a few areas where there are switches and things that don't seem to matter or do anything that I could find. I didn't look that hard I guess, but the final dungeon in particular had that GIANT area with the color puzzle, plus some elevators and levers that were completely irrelevant for actual dungeon progression. I'm sure they lead to some sort of treasure, but I felt so over-powered anyway it didn't seem prudent. The elemental weapon system too was skippable - I mean, I skipped it completely. Maybe it does make a difference, but there was no clear indicator as to how, plus the weapons were all weaker than my standard so I just ripped through.
I did enjoy the game, though. The water dungeon and the final dungeons were both slogs, but the Sky Temple ruled. The battle system was cool and just something about the whole romp was a good time. I fully get what you mean about the soundtrack vibing with pure nostalgia; it definitely has that tint. I'd most certainly play through an english patch if one dropped. It'd be nice to not have to sit holding my phone up to the screen like a total nob lol.
So Zelda it wasn't, but damn it was fun. I have no doubt this would have at least been a cult classic here in the states. I'd give it a 3, MAYBE 3.5/5.
Now that I've got this sick Pi build, I think I might start tackling more of the recommends from this channel - keep those vids coming my dude ๐ค
Oh, P.S. at floor 100 in the waterfall dungeon, you get a Proof Ring that essentially boosts all your stats. The dungeon continues beyond that though, so no clue if there is a bottom.

Thanks for the support Tyler, really appreciate you watching the videos!
Yeah, I don't see why I couldn't sort out some downloads for the mixes. I have two new mixes planned for the hopefully not-too-distant future, so when I get those done and dusted I'll aim to upload them all here in one post. Keep your eyes peeled!

Love your videos Sean! I feel like anyone who had a PS1 in its heyday had a handful of random obscurities that deserve their time in the sun, so a project like this is such a goldmine for us crate diggers.
Would you ever consider uploading the audio files for your Club Playstation mixes to patreon? Iโd love to rock these in the car or gym, old adverts and all, but really donโt want to give google any more of my money via Youtube Premium.

It's always been a personal preference to keep these longer projects as a singular video, a complete story from start to finish I guess you could say.
There are definite benefits to splitting it up both in regards to time and potential views, but even if it's more work in the short term I usually go with whatever my preferred vision for the project is, and that's always going to be one big UNIT of a video :)

Hey Sean, your videos have inspired me to do some more PS1 playing of my own - and I'm sure they're going to be invaluable references whenever I attempt to play the Cryo games - so it seemed right to show some support. Best of luck with your 2024 plans!

From Soft has been on my short list for a while. It might also be nice to make a video that only has 10ish games ๐

Love your videos Sean! I'm not sure if it's obscure or forgotten but I would love to hear your opinion on trap gunner someday seeing as I literally cannot grasp it enough to beat the first level. Cheers!

Have you decided on the next big publisher/dev video after Capcom? Would you consider From Software?

Thank you for adhering to your cat policies, which I'm assuming were penned and signed off by none other than your cats. For real, though, CAPCOM! That should be amazing. Capcom's contribution to the PS1 library is nothing short of paramount to the experiences I had as a kid. The Fighter's Edge cover art for the crossover games still hold a special place in my heart that I can't begin to put words to. I still think about World Tour Mode in Street Fighter Alpha 3 and wonder why it took so long for other fighting game franchises to offer anything close to single player content like that. Thanks for the hard work, Sean! Your contributions aren't just valuable in terms of entertainment, but serve a historical purpose as well.

I recently started making a list of PS2 games I want to play using the VGL video and I'm nearly at 100 just through F. Though did find out that there were a full 3 Choro-Q games that got localised on there.

Thanks for the update, and the videos as always. I was worried that you had a copystrike or something when the video went down and back up again. But yeah, sh!t happens and I enjoyed it the first time haha
