Is this the end? Like after the next couple epilougue chapters, are we done? Ngl feels unfinished. But I get if there was going to be another arc it'd have to be pretty big.

2025-02-22 16:54:22 +0000 UTCI still have hope that Barris will survive. Maybe she links up with Iskat (we haven't seen her die) and Yoda and they do a last minute exit after torching the place.

2025-02-21 17:52:09 +0000 UTCI love the changes and additions you made to this chapter. It has added a lot of depth to scene and made it clear that the fleet knows they are there for not just Baris but the Jedi. The change to the ending scene also transformed Barisis death from another tragic death to a bittersweet sacrifice. It was as beautiful as it was heartbreaking.

2025-02-21 14:32:41 +0000 UTCNice updates all over. I like it a lot. To those of you who are returning for the update, here are where the major updates are found. There are more edits as well scattered all over the chapter. Start: “–Should we intercept the Tetan contingent?” Screed’s attention was now following the cathedral-warships transiting through the Home Fleet’s formation. End: ⁂ Start: From the pilothouse of the Royal Cinnagar, Vinoc watched as the crystal-stone urban sprawl of Coruscant grew closer. End: ⁂ Start: Age-old gears screamed and shuddered. End: End of the chapter

2025-02-21 14:18:56 +0000 UTCSome thoughts on why this reads better: 1. Before, it felt rushed and strange that the main character wasn't in the finale. Now, it feels like torches are being passed. Barriss to the younglings and Master Shaak Ti and Rain to his droids and commanders. It feels like the beginning of the end and the start of a new beginning, which is a good spot for something to end at. 2. This new plan captures the flexibility and genius of the Separatists. "No sane person would do that." "Good news, everybody!" 3. Barriss has agency in her reactions, now. Before, it felt like Barriss was trapped. Now, it feels like "I need to stay to finish my mission," whereas before it was like, "I guess I'll die." 4. The Lexington and Saragota were unfired chekovs guns whereas now they are fired.

2025-02-21 12:09:22 +0000 UTCOkay, just read the updated version of this chapter. Couldn't point to a single sentence or paragraph that stuck out as new...and yet, somehow seemed to read smoother and clearer than the original. Now, my opinions. I think we are looking at a galaxy wide fracturing of governments. There will be an Empire, but it will not be galaxy-wide. The Jedi will find hidey-holes and fade into obscurity for the foreseeable future, then re emerge to re-establish the order...perhaps with a less centralized and less politically driven leadership. I am assuming that Rain will take in those he can...but Palpatine must be pulling his hair out as the greatest threat to his empires stability slips away. Yes, the majority will die. Especially the older Jedi...but without Vader to lead the inquisition to root out the survivors? Problematic. Speaking of...where is Anakin? I don't recall where he was last.

2025-02-21 09:31:08 +0000 UTCNot sure what you mean by the death of Dooku. Unless I missed something in the last two chapters, he’s alive and well - he got a last-minute save from Trench.

2025-02-21 09:13:11 +0000 UTCMinor text quibbles: "The thirty-two warships Lexington commanded -were- rusted old hulls..." And there's a Verticall in there about the Lex and Saratoga. It's meant to be either Vertical or Vertically, but the two L's no Y is i think typo.

2025-02-21 06:50:39 +0000 UTCOh, I love the new additions! The additional details of the fleet movements, the characters beats with Vinoc, and most of all, Barriss' agency when making a conscious choice to stay and fight. It definitely changes the tone of the ending.

2025-02-21 06:31:12 +0000 UTCThe text's sense of passage of time is a little wonky in the section where the temple starts burning. It feels like there is something missing between the flamethrowers being called for and the effects of the smoke overwhelming the Jedi defenders. Maybe a stronger break in the text, some extra indication of time passing, or indication or description of the speed of the spread of the smoke. Right now, there's an almost... Teleport-y feel to the way time and characters flow, which is a bit atypical to the usual prose. That said, I fucking loved this. While it is definitely a natural place for Barriss' story to end, I can't help stop rooting for her to survive. The progression of increasing desperation followed by acceptance at the hangar really nearly ties up the end of her character journey.
Michael K
2025-02-19 17:24:02 +0000 UTCI wonder what's going through Palpatines head at this point? As while superficially this looks like how it went down in canon i.e. Dooku falls, the unity of the Seperatists is smashed, Complete control of the government has been seized, Order 66 has been triggered and Jedi are dropping like flies. Only digging a little deeper makes it clear that despite his bests effort to get things back on the rails Sideous control is tenous at best. The Seperatists are still a functional entity and the death of Dooku has severed the last ties binding them. Early shenanigans has massively diluted the impact of him seizing direct control of the clones, much of 'his' military obeys him only in theory. The Rebel/Jedi counter coup is kicking off with major backing from large chunks of the Republic. The Imperial/NR war isn't happening decades down the road, it is happening NOW. He is going to have a busy few years ahead of him after this phyrric victory to turn theoretical control into actual control. Especially as the fence sitters will turn on him just as easily as they turned on the Republic.
Jarrik32
2025-02-18 18:57:01 +0000 UTCHow much do you want to bet that the same cannot be said for Imperial era suits. Hell it's explicitly pointed out that the Imperial remnant is too cheap to fit proper filters to the armour of their stormtroopers. I doubt the GE was much better given the wildly varying levels of quality seen in stormtroopers.
Jarrik32
2025-02-18 18:44:19 +0000 UTCALL clone armour is vacuum rated! There's no such thing as 'ground armour'. For clonetroopers, standardisation is the name of the game, and spaceworthy armour is the bottom line! Coruscant Guard troopers were seen in low orbit in open-air LAATs when they boarded the satellite during Barriss' sabotage operation. Basically, they are all equipped with spacesuits. And spacesuits are rated for both intense heat and extreme cold. In space, being in a celestial shadow (i.e out of view of the sun), is extreme freezing. At the same time, being in direct view of the sun is being blasted with the full force of the... sun--because there is nothing between you and all the solar radiation. Therefore, if you were naked in space and facing the sun, the front of your body is being scorched to ash whilst the back of your body is being frozen to ice. AT THE SAME TIME! Isn't that cool? Ergo, it is an absolute requirement for spacesuits to be rated for both ends of the temperature spectrum in addition to being vac-sealled. Furthermore, the fire was contained to only the highly flammable RoTF, whilst the rest of the Temple was being choked with smoke. The Jedi died from suffocation, whilst the clones have their own rebreathers integrated in their armours. Heat isn't really a factor in the first place! Hope that makes sense!

2025-02-18 10:48:10 +0000 UTCYeaaahhh no i allow myself to call bullshit a bit on this :) if everything was filled with smoke and fire enough to drop a jedi- Clones wouldnt be able to see shit. Not to mention the basic bitch ground pounder suit would not have a lot of air inside. Maybe 5m tops... and that would run out quickly in a burning building. Not to mention they would cook inside of their suits, they had limited enviro protection but pls... a building turned into an over ? They would drop...

2025-02-17 19:13:50 +0000 UTCYou know what they say--if a Jedi's death is not explicitly confirmed, then a Jedi isn't dead!
elsicava
2025-02-17 15:49:34 +0000 UTCI did too. Considering how much she has grown over the course of the story, how much she sacrificed and the fact that the fleet was there for her. She deserved to be promoted to master. Still, I am curious how the Jedi are going to convince the fleet to take them in without Baris to vouch for them.

2025-02-17 15:48:28 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter! I really like how you see the mindset of the Republic Officers towards Order 66. "Are the Jedi evil? Certainly not. Do they deserve to die? No. Are they more a hindrance to us alive than dead? Absolutely." It's a nice way to showcase how the Officers of the GAR were quick to change allegiances to the Empire. Was expecting Shaak Ti to stay behind and have Barriss leave to become the, "New Wave" of Jedi Masters. Still hoping Barriss somehow makes it.

2025-02-17 15:37:51 +0000 UTCIt’s hard to see Barris go out like this, but it is a good way to go. Too bad we didn’t have some clanker intervention on the temple siege. That would have been great.

2025-02-17 07:30:00 +0000 UTCSounds like Honor Salima just declared war on Empress Teta. Sounds like the tactically appropriate thing to do here would be for the Empress to bombard the senate district from orbit to cut the head off the snake. She's already in position, after all. . .

2025-02-17 05:50:50 +0000 UTC@Hellhound You're kind of missing the point here. The issue with Rogue One wasn't that everyone dies at the end in a way that's poignant and consistent with the film's overarching themes. The issue is that it wasted so much of its runtime on faffing about that it only manages to properly develop like 1.5 characters before killing them off, and ends up wasting a lot of potential as a result.
Empty Shelf
2025-02-17 05:09:37 +0000 UTCDude everyone living isn’t the definition of a good story. Say what you will about rogue one, but dying for the cause will always pull at human psychology and make for a great story. Also, think of Shakespeare. In the tragedies all the main characters die and in the comedies they all get married, but people don’t just like the comedies
Hailhound
2025-02-17 04:43:08 +0000 UTCOrbital bombardment in atmo is at best suicide and at worst suicide for nothing. Orbital bombardment in atmo basically means shooting yourself. Even if you had your shots calibrated correctly to pierce atmosphere it’s still not going to be perfect and you’ll be turning the air around your ship into a sun. Kinetics on the other hand…

2025-02-17 00:56:06 +0000 UTCOn the one hand, this was pretty good. On the other, the book is over and the outcome of the greater battle uncertain (though the smaller temple-level one went as expected). I am sad that Barris stayed behind; she's not a master and her connections with the fleet above could have helped the Jedi. Ah, well. I suppose we'll see what comes of all this after the fact.

2025-02-17 00:44:20 +0000 UTC@Aaron Greene, That's true, but that has almost nothing to do with Barriss and the rest of the conspiracy. @Puncake1102, It's not nothing, but there was a lot of buildup and investigative legwork leading up to this subplot with Barriss. Like, I'd estimate a good 20-30% of the story revolved around it, and if this is how it concludes then I'd consider most of it a waste of time. It reminds me a lot of Rogue One, ironically, where the movie does a few things really right but mostly ends up wasting a lot of time and potential, and then everyone dies in the end.

2025-02-17 00:06:21 +0000 UTCWow, so the temple sends their regards, Shaak Ti didn't die ambiguously for once, and Honor cuts her Gordian Knot! I'd love to see how Palps' situation has turned out, there's still so much to play out there. This is easily one of the best stories I've ever read though, looking forward to seeing if you can stick those final notes. A galaxy far, far away has been utterly divided by war, absolutely gripping stuff!
Kieran Hosty
2025-02-17 00:04:09 +0000 UTCThis isn't *just* some of the Jedi surviving. Anakin is far away from Corusant and isn't participating in the burning of the Temple. That's a HUGE difference imo.
Aaron Greene
2025-02-16 23:59:43 +0000 UTCThe Home Fleet just declared war against Teta. Time to point all those guns down and demand a surrender from the Senate.
Monty
2025-02-16 23:33:15 +0000 UTCIt's not just which Jedi survived, the Jedi have survived as a force in the galaxy, and with them force users. Palpatine's grand empire is dead, his monopoly on space wizards is dead, his capital world is shaken and traumatized. Meanwhile the confederacy has it's full military, freaking ship minds now, a fully automated workforce, and hundreds of young force sensitives with a grudge against him and the republic. Even if he survives, give it a decade and he'll be drowning in Durasteel
Monty
2025-02-16 23:30:06 +0000 UTCWell the thing is, Barriss saw Eara's temple ships right outside the temple, above the senate district. At the same time, Honor just fired the first shot against her "captured" warships. While this will definitely not happen in this story. What if Eara decide to do a funny and use her warships in atmosphere to raze the entire senate district to the ground with old palps in it lmao

2025-02-16 23:21:41 +0000 UTCPR wise kids fleeing temple is far better
SlanneshSoldier69
2025-02-16 22:48:29 +0000 UTCWe’re talking potentially hundreds of Jedi surviving, in between the Open Circle Fleet and the Temple evacuees. Considering that the Republic is currently combusting? There conceivably could be 2 major enclaves of Jedi surviving, and there’s going to be much more publicity about what Palpatine pulled
Puncake1102
2025-02-16 22:41:48 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter! I got chills reading the Jedi's last stand
Peter
2025-02-16 22:34:05 +0000 UTCWell Honor probably just did a bad PR move for Palpatines side. Think this just gave the Empress planet a excuse to turn against them. To be fair Honor didn't really have good options. Was either get the political win but lose the Battle or have a better chance at winning the Battle but get a political lose. Well looks like the Jedi did a pretty good last stand. Barris not on the ships going out so dying in the Temple with a good number of Knights and Masters. Though the ships have a majority of Younglings and Padawans with a small number of Knights and Masters to take care of the younger ones.

2025-02-16 22:25:31 +0000 UTCSo, is Palpatine still alive? Because if the end result of this whole Jedi subplot is just a slight shuffling around of which exact Jedi survive Order 66, it's going to feel pretty unsatisfying.

2025-02-16 22:07:26 +0000 UTCHonor doing the ultimate 'I only see bad options. Screw it, who's closest, I'll hit them', and it is not going to go well. Wondering if Eara Lota is blown up or not, I don't know if planetary defense will go 'oh the fleet is shooting at that confederate fleet, we should shoot the Tetan Ships coming in' or not. Few random minor typo/issues in "Barriss Offee turned ?his? gaze upward, to the skylights above.", another case of wrong pronoun for a female jedi sneaking in, and " The antagonism of the Tetan Monarchy, one of Coruscant’s longest standing allies, would be a severe blow to -?- Galactic Republic, as much so as Alderaan’s" missing a "The" for the galactic republic.

2025-02-16 21:17:14 +0000 UTCOkay, so, why was this chapter like four hours late? Well, no joke, my computer blue-screened. I still can't believe that happened. Anyway, I know I've been saying that this is the 'last chapter' and all, but not really! There's still five more, it's just that they'll be titled as 'epilogues' rather than chapters.
