I didn’t get a chance to post this when it was more timely since I was in the middle of a series I didn’t want to break up, but I still wanted to do a proper tribute to the late Rachel Lillis, voice of Team Rocket’s own Jessie. I never got into the games despite buying Gen 1 twice (Blue and Yellow). As a fan of underdogs, though, it was hard not to love Team Rocket’s antics. Their stories were so much more compelling that the heroes’. It’s hard to say which member of Team Rocket faced the most adversity in their formative years, but their motivation felt so much deeper than “wanting to be the very best.” Jessie, James, and Meowth didn’t invent the bumbling anime female-led trio (that would be Doronjo and her lackeys), but they introduced plenty of people to it, myself included. Who knows, without such a high-profile sympathetic villain, there may have been no Winifred Pale.
