This week's movie is Princess Mononoke. I doubt any of you are not familiar with it but I was just rewatching it the other day (for the millionth time) and it really struck me of how influential it has been to my work. Every once in a while I look at something from either my comics or past illustrations and make a connection to Miyazaki's film. I was curious to rewatch the film (it's been a while) because it just popped into my head the other day that this new book I'm writing is very much a reworking of a minor subplot of the movie without me realizing it before.
Anyway. It still love it as much as I did when I first watched it as a kid. I remember grabbing it from the video store with this (very weak) cover below and having no idea what to expect apart from some cool tiny images on the back cover and just being completely hypnotised by it from the very first frame. It still gives me chills.
When the demon boar Nago makes his entrance my life pretty much changed. Even more so with the Forest Spirit.
This time around what really struck with me is just how nuanced and smart all the themes are presented and framed. It would be so EASY, to this day, for the production just to frame the industry represented by Lady Eboshi as completely evil but nothing in this movie is presented as black and white. It's kinda crazy is that for a movie "for children" from 1997.
Miyazaki, goddamn genius.
This week's record is Jüppala Kääpiö - Animalia Corolla because it a weird way a few tracks wouldn't be out of place in Mononoke. It's like music made by Kodamas.
Equal parts ambient and freak-folk and very very unique. Check it out on youtube:

Track highlight: the last one, Saturatus. Brilliant mood and execution. Keep chasing that in my own productions.
The CD comes in a fabric pouch. Really like the presentation.
