There's a good GDC talk about "Cursed Game Design" where you make 2 mutually conflicting game design decisions, and combining them makes a degenerate strategy. Multiclassing is a big one, where they want to frontload good abilities and let you mix & match too much. Archetype Dedication is a good way to give multiclassing without actually allowing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uE6-vIi1rQ
