FULL WATCHALONG ~ WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER

Wet Hot American Summer (2001) is the kind of movie that looks you dead in the eye and dares you to take it seriously—and then immediately throws a talking can of vegetables at your face. A send-up of every summer camp movie ever made, it starts out as a low-budget parody and quickly swan-dives into full-blown absurdist chaos, never looking back. Set on the last day of camp in 1981, it follows a group of wildly inappropriate counselors and oblivious campers as they wrap up the summer with hormones, melodrama, and activities that range from mildly questionable to aggressively unhinged.

The cast? Utterly stacked—before they were household names. You’ve got Paul Rudd as the world's most hilariously useless bad boy, Amy Poehler and Bradley Cooper as overachieving theater kids, Elizabeth Banks doing her best to make “horny chaos goblin” a career path, and Janeane Garofalo and David Hyde Pierce trying to bring actual plot to the madness. Everyone is fully committed to the bit, no matter how ridiculous it gets—which is important, because this movie absolutely goes off the rails. One minute it’s a teen love triangle, the next it’s a government conspiracy, a space station rescue, or an impromptu drug montage that feels like it wandered in from another dimension.

Wet Hot American Summer isn’t for everyone. If you need structure, logic, or jokes that actually build to a punchline, you’re in the wrong woods. But if you like your comedy weird, relentless, and just this side of deranged, it’s a goldmine. It flopped hard when it came out, only to rise like a phoenix made of Aqua Net and short shorts into full-blown cult classic status.

Bottom line: it’s the kind of movie that feels like it was made on a dare at 3 a.m., and we’re all better for it. It's not just a summer camp parody—it’s a full send-off into beautiful, glorious, idiotic mayhem.

it has happened on multiple videos of ours over the last 3 years of filming

I'm a skeptical person at heart but even I had a ghostly experience that I've never been able to explain. Who knows what's out there.

At 18:55 they agree to meet back there in 10 years. They actually made a sequel doing just that. So you have this original, Wet Hot American Summer :10 years later, and Wet Hot American Summer: first day of camp, the Netflix series which is so ridiculous but in the best way.

I was kinda meh on this movie the first time (and The State in general), but, I'll be damned if it just keeps getting better and funnier every time I watch it. I can't explain it. BTW they made a pretty great followup prequel limited series for netflix somewhat recently. Pretty much the entire main cast returned to play slightly younger versions of themselves, even though everyone was IRL like 15 years older. Also, writer/director David Wain made a brilliant "romcom" that I always have to recommend (because no one saw it) -- They Came Together, starring Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd.

For long enough. like 20 minutes unplugged kept running going down 3 floor without power. electricity. Light on fan spinning.

Having ghost is just something you get used to. I had an air conditioner kept running unplugged.

You're right, Tara about the guy being on Law & Order: SVU. Christopher Meloni. And you're right about the dude from Frasier....David Hyde Pierce. And Kevin, you're right about the dude being from Role Models, A.D. Miles is his real name! "Love take me down to the streets." And Katie is played by Marguerite Moreau, who played Connie in The Mighty Ducks movies! Forgot how much of a smoke show she was! And the chick who plays Nancy was the barista in Role Models!
