Scary Movie 2 (2001) is a chaotic, juvenile, ghost-ridden free-for-all that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t even pretend to behave better. It’s less of a sequel and more of a fever dream where a bunch of comedians were locked in a haunted mansion, dared to outgross each other, and filmed the results. It’s messy, crude, and wildly inconsistent—but when it works? It really works, thanks to a handful of MVP performances holding the madness together with chewed gum and duct tape.
First off: Anna Faris is the unsung hero of this franchise. She anchors every scene she’s in with her totally committed, wide-eyed lunacy. She sells every dumb line like it’s Shakespeare and somehow makes you care whether her clueless character Cindy survives the haunted hellhouse. She is, without question, the glue holding this cracked mirror of a movie together.
Then you’ve got the scene-stealing trio of chaos:
David Cross as Dwight, the most aggressively sarcastic man in a wheelchair to ever throw down with a ghost in hand-to-hand combat. His commitment to nonsense is honestly inspiring.
Chris Elliott as Hanson, the disturbingly sweaty caretaker with the world’s most upsetting little hand. He single-handedly (sorry) turns every meal scene into a health code violation.
And Tim Curry, playing it completely straight while surrounded by total anarchy, oozing dry British menace and somehow giving this film more credibility than it deserves. He's having a blast, and we’re lucky to witness it.
Plot-wise, it’s barely hanging on. It borrows the bones of The Haunting and The Exorcist, slathers on a layer of early-2000s raunch, and calls it a day. But no one’s here for structure—we’re here for outrageous gags, over-the-top performances, and Faris screaming her way through another ghost attack.
Look, this isn’t highbrow horror satire. It’s a poop joke buffet. But Scary Movie 2 survives on sheer force of will from its cast, especially Faris and her team of comedic lunatics who dive headfirst into the absurdity without ever once looking for a parachute.
