Does the book "The Last Hawk" by Catherine Asaro count as 'first contact'? In general would enjoy hearing your take on this book, and more expansively, the series.

2024-01-18 08:04:17 +0000 UTCG'day Quinn, Oh, First Contact has such a deep literary history. Where do I start other than comparing the old school to the new school. So, how do you feel science fiction has evolved in regards to First Contact...Do the old school concepts such as H.G.Wells 'The War of the Worlds' still terrify and hold relevance with its original concepts compared to something like the modern Jeff VanderMeer novel Annihilation? And if I can throw in a cheeky second question, what First Contact subject material terrifies you the most?

2024-01-18 02:14:45 +0000 UTCOh hey, this book is coming up in my reading queue! Um, not to jump the gun on questions, but... I'm guessing spoilers will be in the video and I should read before I watch, yeah?

2024-01-18 00:23:22 +0000 UTCMy favorite first contact story is “The Andromeda Strain”. Despite our proclivities about viruses, do you think that first contact is a microbial being can potentially be benevolent?

2024-01-18 00:13:09 +0000 UTCHas there been a story written where first contact is smooth enough that war isn't the first result? Unease and wariness, but at least a genuine effort to reach out after the initial meeting. Second, have you read the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers? I've heard it's good but would like a seasoned opinion.
