Movies in July

So there are some obvious movies we all want to see this next month, but I was wondering what some of yours are specifically. Which ones should I keep my eyes out for? I will likely do a poll on this subject soon.

Comments

Mission Impossible is the only one I’m interested in. Tom Cruise has been crushing it!

Tony G. Moro

it's so expensive ><

Just got two tickets for Oppenheimer in IMAX in the special film rate Nolan recommends, for myself and my friend. $52.70… this better be good. Lol

Haha for sure. We definitely need more female filmmakers that are willing to be more transgressive, to explore human darkness from a feminine perspective, and not in any kind of didactic, “topple the patriarchy” kind of way. That way is boring because, once I grasp that’s the movie’s rigid line of thinking, I know what set path they’re going to take, and any kind of potential wildness is sapped out of the movie. That was the magic of Titane: you didn’t know where the fuck that movie was going to go. And I like Bigelow as well, particularly Zero Dark Thirty and Strange Days, though I need to revisit both. And I agree, just as Bigelow expertly explored masculinity in The Hurt Locker, so have plenty of men in the past expertly explored women in their films, including those you just mentioned as well as Bonello in House of Tolerance. And yes, Patty Jenkins is very overrated, even before Wonder Woman. I never understood the acclaim surrounding her. Monster was…more of a stunt than any kind of profound character study. We’ll see what Gerwig does with Barbie. She might have something bold and interesting to say or…it could be more of the same bullshit she pulled late in the third act of Little Women, where she couldn’t bear to simply let Jo get married, but rather played meta-games with the audience as to what designated a happy ending for her. But that’s a whole other topic. Either way it goes, Barbie will be worth checking out.

but the opening day is a Tuesday so you probably won’t have a super hard time getting a good seat

Jared Angcanan

definitely get em beforehand if you wanna do IMAX, which i always recommend for that framchise

Oh lord...Olivia would die to be labeled as a Gerwig. But for sure...Gerwig is far more interesting than others, and I tend to be fine with a lot of her success overall. I just...maybe it's just me, and I know this is a "controversial" thing to say but...I feel women like Kathryn Bigelow would be less accepted today if she had made The Hurt Locker in 2023, due to the political landscape in Hollywood. Yet that kind of movie is way more my speed. More what I want to see from women. Because her films are more masculine in style. Whereas our feminist filmmakers these days always need to represent some feminine angle which naturally feels too pointed. It's always about exploiting some cult of personality bullshit. Perhaps I am different...but few of the mainstream female directors connect with me. Gerwig never really did, though I admire her work. I think Campion is also quite out of touch these days. I find Patty Jenkins to be overblown due to the push for female filmmakers, but even during the Monster days she felt overblown. Don't care for Celine Sciamma and her point of view. I could go on but I won't. Quite frankly I find that some great male filmmakers tend to tell stories about women better than women do. You may have noticed that I had quite a bit of feminine movies on my top movies of the 1970s video. From Carrie to 3 Women to Picnic At Hanging Rock. All of them directed by men, and all of them seem to capture an aspect of femininity that women filmmakers somehow miss. Say what you will about Polanski (and there is plenty to say)...but I think he also gets the female experience in a way that is more honest than almost anyone. For me currently, Julia Ducournau is one of the few modern female directors that I connect with...where she really pushes towards the brutal in a way that feels bold, and it feels like she understands a certain alienated aspect of women that is rarely represented: the violent and raw woman. What we are really capable of. To me this is exciting, and more what I feel expresses my point of view as a lady. Women creators don't always have to be so soft, romantic, passive but...I also understand that maybe this is more the inclination naturally for them. But also, I don't think female films should have to be about women, or female empowerment, in order to be successful. But such is life these days. I just hope for more hardcore ladies making movies. Like go full Gasper Noe rough yo....and then I will feel like we are actually exploring the liberation of female creativity.

Oh I agree. She’s been placed on too high a pedestal, a position of gushing admiration that, say, Olivia Wilde wishes she were at. But…that’s what the media does these days. Given her past films though, she’s likely got more on her mind than just making some silly toy movie. Whether it’s a success or failure, it’ll be something worth talking about I’m sure. And yeah, I’d say Oppenheimer being first is the right way to go. But we’ll see how the poll goes.

Bennett Oliver

I'll be honest...I'm not a huge Greta Gerwig fan. And this insistence on making her the poster child for feminism bugs me. But I am interested in the film for sure. Had they gone the Amy Schumer route, I likely wouldnt care. But as you say, I expect more elevated material now. I am leaning more towards Oppenheimer first though. I will ask everyone what they are more interested in seeing that day.

Deepfocuslens

You think it's best to purchase MI tickets way in advance? Asking because I should probably get one so I can review opening day

Deepfocuslens

Outside of the big ones, really looking forward to Theater Camp and weirdly looking forward to The Haunted Mansion movie.

Tyler Shobe

This indie director made a small scale movie called Oppenheimer, maybe I’ll check that out if it manages to get a theatrical release

Mees

Joy Ride and Theater Camp look like promising comedies. I’ve been thirsting for some good old fashioned, raunchy fun. But yeah, I am for sure doing a Barbie/Oppenheimer double feature on opening day, and I’ve already purchased my MI:Dead Reckoning early access ticket.

Jared Angcanan

Well, I must admit that it’s the big high profile ones that mainly have my interest. But I’ll try to include some lesser-known films that might be worth looking at. Sympathy for the Devil—in what looks like a fusion of Collateral and The Hitcher, Joel Kinnaman plays a regular guy who’s on his way to the hospital to be with his wife who’s giving birth. Along the way he gets hijacked by a psycho played by none other than…Nicolas Cage. He’s in full crazy villain mode for this one. It surprises me that he doesn’t play them more often. But anyways, the trailer promises him going over the top, and do I must watch. Mission: Impossible—I really like these movies, and they’ve stayed consistently good (well, except for the second one). Can’t wait to see what insane stunt Cruise pulls off in this one. Talk to Me—this seems to be a horror film in which a group of friends play around with a mummified hand which leads to one or all of them getting possessed. Trailer makes it look decent enough. Barbie—I’ll be honest: I wouldn’t care at all about this movie, even with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starring, if Greta Gerwig weren’t directing. I’m curious to see what she does with the concept. Could be a smart assessment/deconstruction if the impact of Barbie…or a complete drag. Which brings me to… Oppenheimer—Love him or hate him, every new Nolan film is an event, and he seems to be aiming high with this one. Personally, I hope that one day he backs away from these big IMAX epics that he likes to do and make a smaller, more intimate film on the level of Memento. Go back to his roots, basically. He could stand to do that. But I also hope he succeeds with this one. It’s an interesting enough subject. You might say I wish it to be…da bomb.😁 I regret nothing.

Bennett Oliver

I'll watch Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One in theater for sure. Barbie looks like it might be a fun movie but I'll wait till it will be available on streaming, as well as Sympathy For The Devil.

Oskitello

Dead Reckoning for Hayley Atwell Barbie for Ryan Gosling Oppenheimer for Christopher Nolan
