DUNE

So what do you guys think about the delay of DUNE? I had a strong feeling that would happen. With the COVID restrictions that prevented the theatrical release for part I, and now this...seems Dune can't catch a break. Obviously the reasoning is due to the writer's strike, but I wondered your thoughts on the film, and how you feel about the delay. For me it's more what it represents that is what I'm interested in. Most people on here know that I really was not a fan of part I, and so I don't really have emotions tied to it as a film specifically.

ugh...I really didnt like his score for 2049...yet this was so much worse. People either thought it was a masterpiece (the zimmer fans), or hated it (me). All his compositions fight the films themselves imo. It's like that fucking amazing scene in The Dark Knight. The interrogation scene between Joker and Batman. One of the most amazing tense scenes ever yo....but fuuuuck the telegraphing in the score. Zimmer ruined the moment for me with those sliding strings. Show some restraint man! For God's sake. We get it....we didnt need you to hammer it in. Heath was doing great without you.

Deepfocuslens

I was actually hoping it picks up in part 2, less exposition.

Deepfocuslens

Dead on arrival. Give me the 5 hour Lynch cut.

PETER COLLINS

I have the sense that they have a rather mediocre film in their hands and they don't know how to cope with it.

Alexandros Alexandropoulos

Zimmer: Oh, you have pitch perfect hearing, huh? BWWAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMM!!!

Bennett Oliver

also the score is Hans Zimmer at his most..."Zimmery," which really was not fun for my ears.

Deepfocuslens

Yeah the Lynch one is just...it's utter chaos. Yet I've seen it multiple times and have grown fond of it, and find it quite funny. And aesthetically I think it's way more interesting than anything in the new Dune. Yes...the new Dune has nothing that interesting about it to me. But I was excited about it, because even if I found Bladerunner 2049 not nearly as textured and visually interesting as the og...it was still so incredible as an experience, I hoped Dune would be similar. But it really wasnt. I dont think you're missing much.

I haven’t seen the first part, and to be honest, I never had much interest in watching it to begin with. I don’t know why. It’s not like I have an aversion to science fiction and I’m aware that the novel is a celebrated classic. It’s just that I took one look at the trailer and marketing for Part One…and sensed that there was nothing interesting, unique, or weird about it. It felt like every other bland, boring fantasy epic being marketed in the last few years, just with a better cast than usual. And good sci-fi/fantasy needs to be at least a little bit weird and strange and wonderful for me to feel that something imaginative is at work. When there’s none of that, who cares? I usually don’t write in on topics just to say that I couldn’t care less, but…I couldn’t care less. It’s only in the last few months that I saw the David Lynch version. Holy shit, what a fiasco that was. Which is such a shame because, unlike what I guess about the remake, there is so much of a vision at work, as well as a touch of the Lynchian craziness to the proceedings. But the movie is a narrative mess. You really get the sense that entire portions of the story have been taken out and that entire arcs have been rushed through (why does Sean Young fall in love with Kyle MacLachlan? Because she just does, dammit!) But two things emerged from this utter failure that I am grateful for: 1) Lynch learned the importance of having final cut, and 2) Blue Velvet from his deal with Dino. I still think, however, that Lynch can make a hell of a fantasy film if he wanted to, should he decide to step away from his dark, dreamy noirs. He has the imaginative capability to do one, and a fantasy with his sensibility would be quite something to behold. Think of the grotesques he would concoct to populate that movie. And he’ll be damn sure to have final cut this time around. As for the effect of the strike, I’m with Stephen. There are other movies that I’m more interested in that I hope aren’t delayed. That shouldn’t be a problem for Michael Mann’s Ferrari since that was independently produced. And David Fincher’s The Killer and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro were produced by Netflix, so I don’t think those will be pushed either. As for Killers of the Flower Moon, the most likely to be delayed…as of now, there are no plans to change the release date, so that might still come out in October. I hope no further delays are made. This is shaping up to be the best year for movies since before the pandemic. I’d hate for that to be derailed because of the strike. I already hate AI enough as it is. And oh yeah, one last thing, I was looking through the lineup for the Venice International Film Festival and apparently Bertrand Bonello and Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) have new films respectively called The Beast and Evil Does Not Exist entered into competition. I hope those films get released here in the US sometime soon.

Bennett Oliver

I was not interested in the first one and as for this strike, studios apparently want AI bots to replace writers which is ironic because more and more films since the 1980s have felt like a computer wrote them. I get the feeling that it won't be much different for audiences regardless of who wins.

Wolfman Brandon

Lol She definitely isn’t afraid to go for it. I admire her confidence

Tyler Olson Films

Yeah me too. I feel like the new one tried to learn from the mistakes of the original film. And that made me glad to see them separating it into parts. And yet...it just didnt come together for me. I'd rather watch a movie full of flaws, that has some fun and some personality, some raunch to it...rather than a film trying to cover all its bases as a faithful adaptation, that doesnt really have a compelling point of view for me.

Deepfocuslens

It is what it is. Just sucks since I don’t see this strike ending anytime soon. Hopefully we’ll have some interesting movies to see for the holiday season.

Stephen

haha...so admittedly I am way more sad that Zendaya won't get her red carpet Fashion tour this fall. Won't lie...her fashion choices were infinitely more interesting than anything I saw in the first film lol.

Deepfocuslens

Yeah...I kinda feel like you might need to be prepared for Killers to be pushed back. Hopefully not. But it's definitely looking likely.

Deepfocuslens

certainly

Deepfocuslens

I admire Lynch’s version for its weirdness and personality too, and I woulda liked to see more of that in this new one. But with that said I really enjoyed it all the same.

Tyler Olson Films

Oh yeah I’m pumped for both of the “Killers” Lol. Also will be good to see Michael Mann coming back. Fingers crossed your birthday movie will hold its release date!

Tyler Olson Films

Agreed for a movie this big promotion shouldn’t be an issue but based on their recent decisions the studios clearly don’t know what they’re doing.

Stephen

Of course I’m excited to see it as soon as possible, but ultimately it just makes me more upset with studios who refuse to cooperate and compromise and are making the consumers pay for their greed in the form of us having to wait

kron

I enjoyed the first one enough that I planned on seeing the second one. The SAG strike putting it on hold because I guess they need the huge names attached to the film to promote it is really fine by me. If the strike puts more pressure on the studios to negotiate in good faith, I can wait a few more months.

Shaeffer Holt

My guess is it’ll be the first of many delays. I liked the first one just fine but I’m not too concerned about it being pushed back. On a scale of 1-10 it’s a 6 for me. Fine nothing special. My most anticipated movies for the rest of year include: Killers of the Flower Moon (Scorsese) The Killer (Fincher) Ferrari (Mann) The Bikeriders (Nichols) Flower Moon in particular opens on my birthday. If it gets delay THIS MEANS WAR! 😡😁

Stephen

I’m kinda bummed out. That was probably my most anticipated movie after “Dead Reckoning”. And The movie’s done, so I don’t get why they won’t just release it. I guess its because the actors won’t be able to promote due to the strike or something, but like..So? I don’t need to see Zendaya in a scripted interview with jimmy Fallon and his fake laugh. I just wanna see the damn movie. But I digress

Tyler Olson Films

well good luck with that!

Deepfocuslens

sure but, it's also just a lot of the directional choices made that I didnt care for, which didnt help the situation.

Deepfocuslens

Disappointed, but at the same time it gives me more time to finish the novel first, and finally watch Lynch’s film

Henri J. Mertens

I think the first part can be boring to a lot of people because the book's first third, ngl, is pretty densely boring. Still love the book, but I can't deny that.

vince2k

Disappointed cause I do love part 1 but also not surprised. Looks like Oppenheimer is sweeping the tech categories come Oscar season.

Tyler Shobe

I just find the new Dune to be so boring and unimaginative, cold and unemotional. Lynch's Dune is a complete trainwreck...but at least it's fun, grotesque, interesting, weird. It's at least intriguing as an experience. This one just doesnt have it for me. But like you say I'm hoping it gets better as the tension increases within the story. I just feel like I wanted more a Bladerunner 2049 level of quality, and I don't feel we got that here.

Deepfocuslens

Kinda bummed out because Dune Pt. II (and maybe Pt. III if there is one) is where shit hits the fan. The protagonist becomes a psychopath and it's kinda insane to see unfold imo. Also, still annoys me that this strike has been going on for, like, over a month at this point. And every action of the major studios paints an extremely bad picture of them so yeah lmao.
