Double Feature

What is the weirdest double feature experience you've had? I don't mean necessarily at a theater. Just...a time when you watched two movies back to back, maybe on your own, maybe with friends. But I've realized looking back on it that I've had a few strange ones. Like me watching Irreversible followed by Sweet Charity. Or that one Christmas eve where I watched 12 Years A Slave and Django Unchained back to back XD. I suppose there's at least thematic consistency there.

I was in highchool and in love with Britney when that movie came out. She could do no wrong, but came as close as she possibly could with that movie.

Carl

Don’t forget Cool As Ice, where Vanilla Ice uttered the immortal words “Drop that zero and get with the hero!”

TenzingNorgay82

This is very amusing. Thank you so much. A very interesting combination. I've never seen Crossroads but lord....I know alll about it. Britney was my era of course. My Queen as a fourth grader lol. But I never got around to that one. Which is a real shame, because I actually enjoy watching bad movies made for famous pop stars. From Justin To Kelly, Burlesque, the list goes on. But after In the Bedroom....quite jarring.

Deepfocuslens

I've really enjoyed these responses. You guys are very creative. And funny....some of these combos I'd never ever think of in a million years.

Deepfocuslens

Oh, no, you definitely top my movies with your lists. I meant from my own personal experience of polar opposite movies.

TenzingNorgay82

That's definitely a doozy. I think I may rival that polar opposite combinations. Check out my lists 😂.

Back in 2002, I made the conscious decision to see two very different films in the theater on the same day. One was an indie film that was garnering massive amounts of acclaim from critics and expected to receive tons of love (at least, with nominations) from the Academy. The other was … nothing like that whatsoever. The first film was In the Bedroom, one of the most depressing films I’d seen in my 19 years of life at the time. I left the theater shaken almost to my very core. I grabbed some dinner at a local restaurant and contemplated life as I knew it. I willed myself to search for something else to watch to recover from the sadness I was experiencing. Which leads me to film choice #2: Britney Spears’ Crossroads. I was hoping for a Cool as Ice kind of easy going fun time at the movies. What I got was … let’s just say I almost bit my hand off from hating the movie so much. Nothing about it was good past the first few minutes (and not because Britney was in her underoos, but because of the casting of Dan Aykroyd as her father). I would have left the movie and gone to see something else, but I just kept hoping it would get better. It did not. The film was infected by Tamra Davis, director of such comedy classics as CB4, Billy Madison, and Half Baked. How does someone go from those hilarious movies to this HUMONGOUS PIECE OF GARBAGE?! Anyway, needless to say, I stopped seeing films directed by her. And Shonda Rhimes wrote it. And … well … she’s written a fair amount of crap, so nothing surprising there. I watched the first couple of seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. It’s not a good show. Anyway, that’s my long-winded, hopefully amusing answer to your question. I can’t think of a more polar opposite combo for movies to watch theatrically or in general back-to-back. They are just light years apart in terms of quality.

The death of Bambi's mom was a delayed shock to me as a kid--I didn't actually get what happened until my older sister explained what happened. (Is it less impactful to a modern child?) But the "Rites of Spring" that immediately follow blot out the sadness pretty quickly, AND give us one of my favorite childhood words--"twitterpated." But Spring is not all billing and cooing, when Bambi--the only one among the trio of avowed bachelors that faces competition for his mate--gets into it with a rival buck. (Perhaps there are outtakes of Thumper thumping another rabbit, or Flower clawing it out with another skunk. :) ) I loved the way they progressively washed out the details of Bambi and his foe, using deep dramatic colors and solid shapes to depict their primal combat. It sets the tone for the darker events to follow. Between the buildup of panic-generating fear among the birds, the brutality of the hunt--those dogs were terrifying--and the careless destruction of the forest from an untended fire, the final third is pretty traumatizing--a lengthy sequence with no break until the short, upbeat finale. As a kid, I remember crying a lot at this movie; as an adult, I remember coming away with an angrier feeling--basically, people suck! (As an older adult, I've mellowed some: yeah, people suck, but not all of them and not all the time. :) )

I enjoy seeing retro movies in the theater . And on that day , lol. That's what they were showing. That's hardly the worst most odd one I've mentioned lol. A documentary about the band r.e.m., then avengers? 😂. Blue beatle the Metallica live . 🤪😬🥴😬🤪

swift minus one

Jojo rabbit and the twilight zone. Lol. Your proly drinking now lol. Not the twilight zone film, the original TV show .

swift minus one

Here we go. There's more 😂. john wick /interstellar/dumb and dumber to spare parts /wedding ringer /project almanac / antman /american ultra/hitman 47 star wars the force awakens/joy/concussion Hunger games 3 & 4 Rifftrax Xmas double feature, shorts, Santa Claus table 19/logan/lion

Oh, another one was The Quiet Girl, the Irish film. One of the most simple, subdued, slow paced films I’ve ever seen, almost to a fault. An hour later I watched Everything Everywhere All At Once in the same theater. It’s the most I’ve ever felt like I was on drugs without actually taking drugs lol

Henri J. Mertens

Lol, that's what the doctors say too, now let me wipe my mouth, WIPE MY MOUTH! :)

Ross Skilton

Yeah the nostalgia level with Anastasia for me was through the roof while rewatching it lol. The staging of the musical sequences are pretty great. Although, I’ve always thought Bartok was an annoying little shit haha. Diary of Anne Frank was disappointing to me. For some reason I thought it was going to be on the same level as a film like The Miracle Worker (although admittedly that movie has a lot of flaws of its own)

Henri J. Mertens

Wick would've been a nice pallette cleanser I'd think

Deepfocuslens

haha wow. I have a lot of nostalgic sentiment in my heart for Anastasia. Much less so for The Diary of Anne Frank. XD...was never a fan.

Deepfocuslens

Very interesting.

Deepfocuslens

Haha that sounds more like something I'd do.

Deepfocuslens

Godfather and Wonder Woman. I have...so many questions.

Deepfocuslens

I see it. Very creative. I approve.

Deepfocuslens

nice. Is it just me...or is the third act of Bambi way more scary than the death of the mom at the beginning?

Deepfocuslens

Funny Girl and Of Human Bondage....you are a very special person :))))

Deepfocuslens

There's a restaurant across from where I work called Tampopo but it's been closed for a while. Yet we always seem mysterious folks walking in and out. We just assume it's some drug outfit lol. Not uncommon in these parts.

Deepfocuslens

Fantastic XD....that's so incredibly random

Deepfocuslens

lol...wow, I do feel I'm unraveling XD

Deepfocuslens

It was alright if you're a fan of the franchise and have seen most of what it references - I wrote the following review on letterboxd: It's not perfect, the animation style feels a bit basic at times and it gets a little too schmaltzy, also it is really just a kind of love letter to existing fans having echoes of the original series throughout. I did not entirely gel with using new voice actors for the cast members who are no longer with us, but assuming they could not repurpose older voice recordings, it was better to have them than not. However, as a (probably) final rodeo with the remaining original cast it was a nice little treat after a sixteen year absence.

Ross Skilton

Thank you. I posted a round 2 lol

swift minus one

Round 2 lol. I apologize for loss of brain cells reading this. Revenge of the sith / batman begins Thor dark world / jackass bad grandpa Jojo rabbit/ twilight zone 60th anniversary 6 episodes Trumbo/victor Frankenstein/ rifftrax Santa Claus and the ice cream bunny Shazam/ captain marvel Force awakens/ it's a wonderful life Bob Dylan documentary/ the greatest showman

swift minus one

Yeah--it was always an eclectic mix. :) Looks like you had more than your own share of theatrical mashups.

Brian Kelly

I watched a bunch of movies the last week of 2022 and the most jarring was Kwaidan and Demolition Man. Both were great though.

Arthur Augustyn

David Cronenberg’s The Fly followed by the food movie Tampopo. Yeah, if I had to do it over I wouldn’t pair those films together.

Bennett Oliver

How was that Babylon 5?

swift minus one

This happens to me quite often, the weird doubles (and occasionally trebles) that I've had just this month include - 25th - Chisum & Elizabethtown 20th - Tenebrae, Great Expectations (1974), Luminous Procuress 17th - Funny Girl & Of Human Bondage (1934) 16th - So Long at the Fair & Babylon 5 The Road Home 12th - Gigi, Gladiator Cop & Too Late Blues 4th - 2010 & Goya's Ghosts 2nd - When You're Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Down with Love

Ross Skilton

That's awesome!!!

Bambi and Humanoids from the Deep. We had a cheap and not-so-cheerful local theatre that used to delight in putting together odd double features like this one.

Brian Kelly

I showed my best friend Fantastic Mr Fox and Fight Club back to back and we both spent the rest of the day drinking and laughing about how they both dealt with masculine insecurities. Mr Fox always wanting to be viewed as “fantastic” and Tyler Durden being the personification of “cool.” A lot of it started when we compared the characters in Fight Club threatening to cut someone’s balls off with Mr Fox having his tail shot off as a moment of humility for him.

Matthew Silcock

Good combos

swift minus one

Here's just a few to start. And these were in a theater. Duff mckagen documentary/X-Men Apocalypse Godfather/ wonder woman Batman 89/ spiderman homecoming Rem documentary/ avengers age of Ultron Close encounters/ inhumans Rifftrax star raiders/ dark Phoenix Yellow submarine/ antman 2 Labyrinth/ across the spider verse Blue Beatle/ Metallica live from Texas

swift minus one

I did Con Air and My Neighbor Totoro in the middle of the pandemic. Both were on HBO at the time, and they both brought me immense joy for the entire runtime, and that’s where the similarities end. 10/10 - would recommend for any time of the year.

Jared Angcanan

The only double feature I can think of is when I was off a gel tab alone in my room once, and I watched Pan’s Labyrinth and then Salo, for no particular reason. They are actually a little similar in some ways. They are about the same length (2 hrs), both have a psychedelic feel and deal with the horrors that children faced during World War II. I prefer Pan’s Labyrinth but that was still an interesting double feature. Then I watched Jeanne Dielman as a palette cleanser for the comedown.

Shane Palamara

I once showed a friend in college who wasn't a movie person David Mamet's House of Games and Airplane back to back. She wanted to see something more light hearted after seeing something so tense although she did like it. More recently, I watched No Country For Old Men and Penny Serenade with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne each for the first time ever immediately after buying them on DVD.

Wolfman Brandon

This month, I watched Badlands and Driving Miss Daisy back to back. Just an extreme juxtaposition of quality and I laugh every time I check my Letterboxd log. Irreversible and Mysterious Skin is another double feature I had. By far the most disturbing, uncomfortable 4ish hour stretch I've felt in my life.

vince2k

The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and Don Bluth’s Anastasia. I forgot how genuinely unhinged Anastasia is lol. Should’ve been historical fiction about a girl who’s tricked into believing she’s Anastasia…instead of actually being Anastasia. Amateur historian Bob Atchison said that Anastasia was akin to someone making a film in which Anne Frank “moves to Orlando and opens a crocodile farm with a guy named Mort".

Henri J. Mertens

Earlier this year I did Blonde and the first John Wick back to back which was whiplash to say the least.

Tyler Shobe

Hooooo. Wow. How much time u got before I answer? Lol. I got dozens. Some triple ones too
