Workout Tracks (Score or Soundtrack)

Ya'll know I'm a workout junkie. I run a lot and I always have my pump me up playlists ready. But sometimes I feel like being a total dork and running to the score to chase scenes in movies, or something really lame. Makes your workouts feel like the stakes have been significantly raised. Anyone else do this? Share your most embarrassing examples. XD

My running music is usually the How to Train Your Dragon score. It’s majestic and thrilling.

Henri J. Mertens

Nice. Hopefully you did the Tom Cruise run. You have to. It’s almost a requirement when you’re working out to Mission: Impossible. Also, as a bonus, pretend Simon Pegg is in your ear and he’s directing you to where the bomb is.

Yeah I guess so to an extent, when I sit down to make a playlist I look to create a specific ambience and vibe, but if someone discovers a moment, a song or I get the whole group vibin' that's definitely a cool bonus. Incidentally, I recently completed a film-making course and I have a sub to adobe/premiere pro until the end of the year (and my editing skills are growing,) If you have a notion to put something kind of nifty together for a future video or just want a cool thumbnail for one of your vids I'd be happy to take a shot at it for fun. I think I recall you like to do your own editing but throwing it out there just in case.

I've tried running outside but the outside air messes with my allergies so I can't breathe well while exercising which causes me to tire out faster. That doesn't happen to me indoors which is why in college I always went to their Indoor gym and ran on the track and field level. I also appreciate your concern. We've been doing better since the funeral. My dad is a saxophone player because of his mom and he played one last song for her to start the service along with his music partner and best friend since childhood who's been like an uncle to the family. I'm not that big into his music because I had to hear it nonstop when my parents still lived with me and he had to record all the time but it was so beautiful that it literally moved me to tears. You could tell every ounce of love was put into it. It was the first time in at least a few years that I cried. The service overall couldn't have been better and my parents and sister set up the whole thing. I'm blessed to be a part of such a loving family.

oh yeah...forgot to mention this week it's been some Tom Cruise-run motivation. I keep pushing myself further and am getting in some of the best shape of my life. So been running to Mission Impossible: Fallout. Specifically the tracks "Stairs and Rooftops" where he is chasing Cavill on foot, and "Escape through Paris" cause....I mean...c'mon. ;). Also a little Across the Spiderverse here and there, both score and actual soundtrack.

That's great! If it's at all possible, you should try running outside sometimes. The changes in ground level, wind, all those variables, really change the experience of it. But also...I just think endorphins of being outside can really help you a lot. I always try to get outside when I can to feel more connected to the earth. And yeah, I know times have been tough lately. So, I'm so glad to see you motivating yourself. So awesome.

I feel so dumb because you guys are mentioning a lot of Morricone and this I didnt even consider. Something like Ecstasy of Gold would be so perfect on a run. I am itching to do it right now! But...I also dont make a point to listen to scores while running and working out. I prefer more modern stuff, with a beat, hip hop, or whatever. Stuff that is adrenaline pumping in the right ways. But the occasional track from a score definitely pops up when I feel like it.

Yah Collateral is one that I sometimes run to for sure. Also for Tom Cruise motivational running, the Mission Impossible Fallout soundtrack. Specifically, the tracks where he is running to chase Cavill, and the one where he is racing through the streets of Paris.

Deepfocuslens

haha man thats an excellent idea. Great choices as well. Can totally picture it. Admittedly I have never been a board game person. But that's a cool way of introducing others to music they might not normally know, yeah?

Deepfocuslens

Yeah I was similar. And yes, our culture as influenced by film as it is, is going to see the world through a cinematic filter for better or worse. I do create all kinds of cinematic moments in my head while working out on the trails. Whether scores are involved or not. Dreamers do. Lol you reminded me of when I was a little kid. I wanted to be the pink ranger so bad cause.....duh, I was a girl. So I had to choose pink. Conformity for the win. But because I had dark long hair with bangs similar to the yellow ranger, they wanted me to be the yellow ranger instead at recess. My best friend at school, blonde and blue-eyed, got to be the pink ranger. I was devastated. hahaha good times.

Deepfocuslens

haha...excellent. You've given me good ideas. Thanks.

Deepfocuslens

Bruh....I literally ran to that yesterday!

Deepfocuslens

Sweet. Yeah I mean...there are way way WAYYY too many to name. Which is why I just go with what's been the nerdiest most embarrassing things I've worked out to this week. I got some good mixes. Dont get me wrong. But...always some lame shit sprinkled in. Like the Pokemon remix. It's...surprisingly motivational lol. Lots of Philip Glass lately, some Terminator to feel my inner Sarah Conner badass. A little Matrix Reloaded, a little Euphoria soundtrack, etc, etc

There are so many to name. I used to blare soundtracks and trailer music from my iPad through my noise-canceling headphones, which I wouldn’t recommend because I’m pretty sure it damaged my hearing. But yeah, having that immersive way of listening to it gets you amped up, gets your mind racing as it takes in the music. Here are some of my favorites: —like Stephen, I love Michael Mann soundtracks, particularly The Last of the Mohicans (check out the main title theme, “Elk Hunt”’ “The Kiss”, and the climactic track “Promentory”) Heat (Moby’s covers of “New Dawn Fades” and “God Moving Over the Face of the Waters”, “Force Marker”), Collateral, and The Insider (this introduced me to Lisa Gerrard with “Tempest”, “Sacrifice”, and “Meltdown”, as well as Gustavo Santaolalla’s “Iguazu”) —speaking of Lisa Gerrard, I would also listen to her work on Gladiator (“Now We Are Free”) and Man on Fire (the ending theme). I think she’s incredible. She started the cliche in the 2000s of having a woman wail operatically on a film soundtrack in order to give it some unearned gravitas, but I think her work still holds up. —“Half the Man” by Methodic Doubt from the trailer for X-Men: First Class —“Brothers in Arms” by Junkie XL for Mad Max: Fury Road —when I got into the video game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, I started listening to “Herr Manelig” by Gamarna and “Helvegin” by Wardruna and Aurora And finally, I’ll mention: —the soundtrack for The Sweet Hereafter, particularly Sarah Polley’s haunting cover of the Tears for Fears song “Courage” There are so many others I could mention, but these I thought of off the top of my head. Some weird shit for sure, but it definitely stirs me up and takes my mind to cool places.

I like to run to The Grid by Philip Glass, it’s so invigorating and really pumps me up.

Asher

I'm with Wolfman and Oskitello on Rocky. To this day nothing gets the adrenaline and endorphins going like watching/listening to Rocky.

There's nothing to be embarrassed about. This feeling gives you extra boost and makes your workout more exciting and effective. Apart from listening to score or soundtrack... I can just imagine a movie scene or certain movement that character performed in the movie, which I imitate in exercise and it elevates my training. I can't count how many times I was kicking and punching the air right after I saw a martial arts movie on VHS during my childhood. For awhile I was under the influence of Power Rangers, especially Tommy character (green ranger), to a degree that I put on Power Ranger outfit to costume party at elementary school. However, I was red ranger. Go figure. Being a Power Ranger makes you feel like fate of the world is at stake I guess. This isn't exactly what topic is about, but my point is that these kind of adrenaline is similar and natural. Rocky IV soundtrack- various artists music or Vince DiCola's score is very good for workout. You can conquer any mountain.

Oskitello

I sometimes create playlists for board game sessions, so for instance for Western Legends (a wild west themed game) I have an appropriate playlist and if a Morricone or a Luis Bacalov drops at the right moment it can raise the tension in the game considerably and enhance the experience. On one of my driving playlists I have Dueling Banjos and I noticed that as the tempo increases I have to fight to keep myself from speeding.

At work I often listen to a movie’s soundtrack or heavy metal if I’m stressed. One day I was pretty much all alone in the office and it was pouring rain outside so of course I listened to the Blade Runner while doing a lot of paperwork. It’s pretty much all time favorite. The soundtrack for Malick’s The New World is one I often come back to along with Michael Manns Manhunter. Also the soundtrack for Collateral is an old favorite. Never be in a car with me when “Ready Steady Go” is playing… 😁 Also I love the soundtrack for You Were Never Really Here especially the Tree Synthesizer & Tree Strings tracks. I’ve listened to them while dabbling in writing this script I may or may not ever finish. In particular with Tree Synthesizer, I immediately was able to find the ending for my story flowing with the beat of the track. Similarly listening to Air by Johann Sebastian Bach I was immediately able to picture the opening montage to my script. Consequently I now have a playlist of various songs and tracks that have inspired various scenes I’ve come up with for the middle.

Stephen

As a teenager, I was obsessed with Rocky and once ran around the block to Gonna Fly Now though I'm sure everyone who's seen the film ran to that song at least once in their lives. Funny you mention working out now because I've just been getting back into it with a new treadmill I bought earlier this month hoping to lose the 15-20 pounds I've gained from being lazy these past few years.

Wolfman Brandon

Yes lol. I listen to music with my airpods at work and my two favorites right now are the Mad Max: Fury Road soundtrack and the Good the Bad and the Ugly soundtrack.
