Random Useless Annoyances
Added 2023-10-13 19:46:38 +0000 UTCI've been singing my own cover of Wicked Game a lot by Chris Isaak this week for...reasons. Every time I think of that song, I am reminded of the finale to that Smallville wedding episode where they feature "Don't Take Your Love Away From Me" by Vast. Ya'll....it's a straight up rip-off of Wicked Game. And when I go on youtube, all people do is praise the song. No one ever mentions Wicked Game. Makes me feel like there's some glitch in the matrix.

That’s funny, I think of that episode of Friends where the song is featured anytime I hear Wicked Games.

2023-10-13 21:30:03 +0000 UTCThat’s crazy. I can hear it especially in the beginning before the vocals start playing. I’m currently listening to “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Steve Baker and Carmen Dave. Probably best known for being on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. It might be a little too doom and gloom for someone currently into “Wicked Game”, but…the skies are overcast and the temperature has dropped. Summer is truly over, and I’m in an apocalyptic frame of mind. Here’s a link if you fancy a listen: https://youtu.be/hwmTCIHPRsM?si=WpXg5eEahSAncnEA

2023-10-13 20:47:57 +0000 UTCWouldn't say they stole. Used a sample. BUt...it's a very obscure sample. And I think I'm the only one who instantly recognized it.

2023-10-13 20:31:27 +0000 UTCOh God…THAT song!? They stole from Blowup? By all means, send me the video. I have to see the comparison.

2023-10-13 20:28:09 +0000 UTCI'll have to send you that video I posted years ago on my instagram where I figured out Groove is in the Heart took from the Blow-Up soundtrack. XD

2023-10-13 20:23:05 +0000 UTCsadly...I'm one of the people who heard the Vanilla Ice version first. And I remember thinking "Wow...what a great instrumental. Why would they ruin it with this terrible rap song?" And then it was like.....oh. XD Recently I'm addicted to the track from TALK TO ME. Spanish rap song, that samples Edith Piaff. Really well used imo.

2023-10-13 20:22:08 +0000 UTCI’m not much of a music buff but…this is all making me think of the “Ice Ice Baby”—“Under Pressure” controversy and how I wish Suge Knight had followed through on throwing Vanilla Ice off that balcony.

2023-10-13 20:20:33 +0000 UTCIt reminds me of when you can't get the rights to a song you want, so you have your composer invert the melody so people still recognize it, but it's not quite right. Mind you, this isn't exactly like that. But it really reminds me of it.

2023-10-13 20:17:59 +0000 UTCAhh! Glad to see a shared love of her work. Very excited to get new music next week.

2023-10-13 20:11:45 +0000 UTCStuff like that makes me feel like I'm in Invasion of the Body Snatchers where pale imitations are celebrated more and sometimes more successful than their originals. *cough cough live action Disney remakes*

2023-10-13 20:11:33 +0000 UTCoh of course I've heard it haha. She and I have very similar vocal ranges. She inspired me to sing it initially.

2023-10-13 20:10:44 +0000 UTCthe similarities are ridiculous to me, and I don't mean from a stylistic perspective, but structural. Strip both down songs to piano chords, or just simple piano arrangement and that's where it becomes glaring. I can sing both on top of each other. Hilarious too that Vast is only half a step off from Wicked Game. That shit annoys me always.

2023-10-13 20:09:57 +0000 UTCYeah, I can hear the similarities…they both have a yearning, pleading hook to them. Except one sounds like Chris Isaak, who has an awesome voice that’s a throwback to an earlier era, and one sounds like it was performed by a generic alt-rock band. But yeah, a lot of songs sound alike, whether they meant to or not.

2023-10-13 20:03:41 +0000 UTCSpeaking of, was reminded of Lingua Ignota's cover of this song today. Haunting, sonically overwhelming rendition that totally fits her musical ethos. Recommend if you haven't heard it.

2023-10-13 20:03:40 +0000 UTCthose fall under the "using samples" category. With the Vast song my complaints are entirely different. They are just hoping no one notices, it feels like. I don't know how you couldn't.

2023-10-13 20:03:35 +0000 UTCLol yeah. However I actually enjoy when Eminem takes a song and raps over it. It feels more like a cover version and an honest use of a previous song. Like “Rhyme or Reason” and “So Far…” from Mathers LP 2

2023-10-13 20:00:30 +0000 UTCyeah exactly. I dont mind an artist being influenced or using samples. The whole Blurred Lines controversy for example, I think was silly and a reach. Terrible song but...irrelevant to the actual lawsuit filed against it. But sometimes its just straight up ridiculous how much they copy. And it's very hard to disguise from people who know their music. This right here is an example of...ya'll think we are stupid or something???

2023-10-13 19:57:13 +0000 UTCI’ve been thinking about something similar lately, with the overuse of interpolations in pop music. Even though the songs often credit the original artist, so many young people today don’t even realize it’s taken directly from a much better song. For example, “Way Less Sad” by AJR uses Paul Simon’s memorable instrumentation from “My Little Town”. The interpolation gives me a freaking brain aneurism lmao
