THANGALAAN

Indian film is obviously quite a big deal around the world. More than some realize. How many of you have heard of Thangalaan? If so, what do you know? Give me the lowdown. I've gotten a couple people mentioning it to me, requesting a potential review possibly in January.

Outside of Satyajit Ray, I don’t really know anything about Indian cinema. Which I suppose is a little embarrassing for a film fan to admit, considering they’re one of the biggest film production centers in the world. I think Bollywood makes far more films in a year than Hollywood does. I think, like a lot of past and contemporary Eastern cinema (Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Korean), which I’ve been trying to see more of, it’s just hard to get access and watch movies from there, even with streaming. Compared to the volume of films being made, very few make their way to America.

People on occasion tell me to get more into Indian cinema/eastern at times. Seems the online following for it is fairly big at times.

Never heard of it before you mentioned it. Just watched the teaser. Looks like some sort of tribal warfare film against the British, with lots of bloody violence and mayhem. Some guy rips a cobra in two with his bare hands! Other than that, I have no idea.
