I think goodfellas and pulp fiction just have a different look and tone ... but not necessarily more polished... it's just a different style. But I get what you mean... he's just not consistently good.

I agree about De Palma. I recently watched Dressed to Kill and towards the end I thought, 'certainly he's not going to do a repeat of the dream scene he did in Carrie, is he?". OMG, he sure did. I was dumfounded, considering his reputation as a filmmaker. I've seen Scarface more than once, mostly due to Pacino's performance, but the crime dramas of the early 90s i.e. Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction etc. were so much more polished that by the time I watched Scarface it seemed amateur. The original is definitely the superior film. Carry, of course, is a horror masterpiece and Blow Out is a great film. I enjoyed Sisters. I've never understood the hype behind The Untouchables but Carlito's Way is a phenomenal film. I'm bouncing around a bit. All in all De Palma has some great films under his belt and is a fun director when he's being playful.

Strongly disagree about Get out. I saw this movie 2 or 3 months ago for the first time and I think it's a very good horror film, and the best Jordan Peele's piece. (I haven't seen The Stepford Wives tho). However, overall he's overrated as director for sure. I struggle more with his later works, like "Nope" and "Us". Some criticism that you said about them is accurate. Also he fucked up The Twilight Zone.

De Palma's big problem is that he doesn't do fleshed out characters very well. He can be great with story construction but rarely does he create people that are compelling enough to see us through them. I always feel like the actors do more for them than he does unlike Hitchcock whose characters are iconic and almost always unforgettable.

And yeah... the Lumière brothers being overrated was a good one 😂

I just can't believe how on point you always are on things... the analogies of "college students taking acid for the first time and announcing their insights" 😂 it's soooo true. And the DePalma and the billboard 👌🏼... anyways... I agree with everything you said, I'm not a DePalma fan but I am a fan of some of his films ... Baz Luhrman you described perfectly... I remember watching "Romeo+Juliet" in theaters at midnight when I was like 14 or something like that and looooved the experience but now I see him exactly as you describe him. Jordan Peele too... I did enjoy "Get Out" and "US" ... I thought they were solid entertainment films but I would not hold him as a great director, no way. At least not yet... "Nope" I saw once and I was a bit bored and it did not deliver for me but I will definitely watch his next movie as soon as it comes out just to see what he's done. And yeah, I guess I kinda agree that Sophia Coppola might be overrated although I loooooove "the virgin suicides" and "lost in translation" ... I remember an interview when her father said that his only advice to her as a filmmaker was to "do what you know" ... write and shoot things that you know. And I guess she took that to heart and it works for me... although I am not a fan of hers I do love those 2 films. But yeah, I would not call her great and I am not eagerly anticipating her next one. Finally I just want to say who I think is an overrated director "Wes Anderson" ... "Tim Burton" and perhaps "Taika Waititi" although I liked Jojo Rabbit, but not as much as other people did... and I definitely want to see him make Jodorowsky's "El Incal" ...
