Ugh
Added 2024-02-02 21:00:03 +0000 UTCI really don't want to watch Dune Part I again but...I barely remember a thing about it. Which would be a problem leading into part II. I know we've discussed it, but what are your thoughts now with some perspective on it? How do you feel about Villaneuve's interpretation?

2024-02-05 20:06:55 +0000 UTCAgree 100% ... I think Villanueve is capable of taking us to new and exciting places... but unfortunately the hollywood studio machine can't allow that to happen so he has to dumb it down... make it accessible... and we get it, it's a business... but if he were to become like a Kubrick with complete creative control and focusing on trying to make the best piece of cinema ever made regardless of who understands it or not... then we might get a masterpiece? Or at least a great DUNE film... 🤷🏻♂️ maybe

2024-02-04 18:09:08 +0000 UTCIf he "Kubricked" the cinematography I would probably love it! They have some amazing costumes and sets, great actors... I just hope that visually we can get our minds blown... or at least some iconic shot that looks amazing... something like that would make me like this Dune a lot more... if they only kubricked the cinematography 😢

2024-02-04 18:01:08 +0000 UTCIf you remember the David Lynch version you'll be able to follow Part II without re-watching Part I. Despite its flaws Lynch's Dune still has more to offer. The biggest achievement of Denis' is the worm itself. It looks like something from another world, as do some of the locations. Aside from that there's not much there.

2024-02-04 00:03:09 +0000 UTCPart 1 is not bad film but yeah, ultimately forgettable and step back from Blade Runner 2049 in Villeneuve's career. Trailer (especially number 3) for Part 2 is promising a better movie to a degree that I'm excited to see it. Don't know if I'll watch Part 1 again before the premiere of Part 2, I don't want to either. However, it seems necessary.

2024-02-03 07:55:50 +0000 UTCI'm basically in the same boat. I remember kinda sorta enjoying it when it came out but merely just as a spectacle. I still dont understand why so many people loved it or cared about the characters or the world it establishes. Nonetheless a part of me wants to see Part 2 if anything to see something made well on this scale.

2024-02-03 00:46:33 +0000 UTCAnd I'll definitely re watch part 1 before I watch part 2 because yup... totally forgotten all about it lol...

2024-02-03 00:31:37 +0000 UTCI'm a big fan of Jodorowsky's Dune... so I have some bias on this... I thought the first film was a good well made action sci fi film... with big budget and scale... but it lacked a lot of the artistry for me... I mean, Obviously I'm not expecting it to be close to a Jodorowsky interpretation... but I was expecting more in the cinematography department... I wish there were these scenes or frames that would get glued to my consciousness... but there wasn't ever anything like that... I think the director is really trying to have good pacing in this film and not make it "boring"... that all other aspects suffer... to me DUNE 1 . It's just a good action sci fi flick... nothing special... part 2 looks better... Villanueve is capable of taking us to interesting territories... but I think that he's in the same predicament as Nolan... and he has to dumb down the material... and even it's visual storytelling to appeal to the masses.... it's tough... but I'm anticipating part 2 .

2024-02-03 00:29:05 +0000 UTCI can’t stand the book, so I think Villeneuve did the best he could with the material

2024-02-02 23:02:20 +0000 UTCIt was decent enough, well shot and all that, I've had no particular desire to re-watch it but I will probably do so before I watch part 2. I really want there to be a part 3 cause Dune Messiah changes so much of what we think about the character and I really want to see how people react to that.

2024-02-02 22:50:49 +0000 UTCIt seemed like Villeneuve's most safe and standard movie, so it's a bit disappointing. That being said, it still was well done and did engage me while I was watching it. I don't consider it great enough to want to watch multiple times, but luckily I know the Dune story so well by this point (from reading the book and seeing various other versions in the past) that I don't need to revisit to remember all the details of the story. I did find it very interesting to watch this fan edit of Lynch's Dune (“Spicedivers” 2012 fan edit, titled “Dune: The Alternative Edition Redux") which incorporated all of the deleted footage and everything. I actually thought it improved the movie.

2024-02-02 22:48:47 +0000 UTCIn its long run time, it didn’t once make me feel anything. The soundtrack and visuals offer something but I never felt invested in the characters. The writing and acting felt flat to me in Villaneuve’s take on Dune. At least in part one. Maybe he will win me over in part two. Arrival stuck with me and Blade Runner 2049 is one of my most rewatched films period, so I was shocked how underwhelmed I was by his Dune: Part One. Because of all the lore around Dune and the passion people have for it, some fellow film nerds act like it is a sin to admit this.

2024-02-02 22:23:34 +0000 UTCIt’s coming out? Thought I’d read it had been pushed back until 2025. Writers strike and whatnot. I’ve watched it 4 or 5 times. Some people read before bed—I rewatch films. I’ll admit that I never last more than 90 minutes before turning out the lights. I like it better than the David Lynch version, so I’m looking forward to the conclusion.

2024-02-02 21:15:20 +0000 UTCI didn’t think it was terrible, but I would say it seems a tad overrated to me. Villeneuve is undoubtedly a strong director and more than capable of handling a film like Dune. Still, for my personal taste, it strays away from some of his most exciting work and right into the Hollywood machine.
