Oscar Poll

Just to get a sense of things...is there anyone here who actually watches the Academy Awards ceremony?

Comments

I just watched Poor Things yesterday and I was blown away. Cast, plot, themes, camerawork, sets, humor, and Emma Stone’s performance. I really hope she wins.

Shane Palamara

The last time I watched it was when they screwed up with La La Land instead of Moonlight for Best Picture. Funny story, I turned it off after they announced the name thinking it actually won until my mom told me either later that night or the next morning what actually happened. I now call the Oscars the annual gathering of the biggest lunatics in the country who have been let out of the asylum for a day. I wouldn't watch if it was the last show on this planet.

Wolfman Brandon

It’s outdated and should be done away. Year ana de armas was nominated had to be worst nominee of all time.

Herbert Baker

Won’t watch until my favorite filmmaker gets nominated.

Paul Robinson

Yeah that's what I mean. Even when I was a kid...we would get so excited for it. 30 minutes in...it's like a boring PTA meeting your parents dragged you to. And every year people question why they watch it. So I just...stopped. Better things to do with ones time lol

Deepfocuslens

That's gotta be a smaller number haha.

Oh it was my superbowl as a kid. It's all ridiculous but as a kid I took it seriously. Though these days I admit I'm very into fashion and so I do pay close attention to the fashion/designers for awards. But beyond that I dont care. But I've been super vocal about why. It's a myriad of reasons. I think even if it still was what it was so far as reputation, like it was in the 90s, I probably still wouldnt watch. It's something I outgrew.

Follow-up question: How many people here actually watch/pay for cable TV?

Patrick Aris

I used to watch them religiously and I remember always having such anticipation to see who the winners would be... the whole red carpet thing I have always hated... and also that the show is basically a comedy skit... I never liked... I took myself too seriously I guess when I was a kid ... lol... but I would watch, I never found the actual ceremony funny or entertaining or anything... I would just like the "in memoriam" or honorable awards type things... and of course the best director, best pic stuff I would be on the edge of my seat... that was back when I was like 10 until I was about 22... then I would just watch the ending... but I don't think I have seen an Academy Awards show in like 10 years... like, at all... I just google the winners later... but I will be watching this years... all this interaction with cinephiles has somewhat re ignited interest in that sort of thing.,, so I'll definitely watch the last half of it...

Sutil

I check it out every year, and then slowly start to regret it when the cringe starts to kick in

Gornay

Nope.

Dean Imperial

Yeah I watch clips the next day that circulate. I guess I meant if anyone watches live. Should've been more specific.

Deepfocuslens

Been long i watched it live since i joined the industry myself and only check the related awards afterwards!

RezaFar

I usually keep up with the show online.

Alexis Gonzalez

I would like to augment my vote to read “lmao no”

Arthur Augustyn

They should just skip the ceremony altogether and post the results on social media and their website. Who was nominated and won is all I care about, not the costly cringe.

Steven Aguilera

I do still watch, but usually DVR’d so I can fast-forward through some of it

Jim Barnes

I used to love the Oscars. Then they tweaked the rules and it stopped being about awarding the best films, but rather the best films that check these specific boxes. So, it ensures that the best films (and cast/crew) are rarely if ever recognized.

TenzingNorgay82

Yeah, but there are a lot of things I don’t like, like the voting system or the skits, but there’s always at least a handful of nominees I’m a fan of, so I’m happy to watch them get their flowers.
