MEGALOPOLIS

Thoughts on the trailer? Feels surreal to finally see actual footage, honestly.

It has a strong digital video feel to me which cheapens it. I would prefer more of a filmic/gritty look (even if faked) to give it a more epic, cinematic quality. It gave me Twixt vibes but I remain optimistic about the fresh feel, cast and story.

Definitely looks worthy of an Imax. The visuals are phenomenal. They have a Zack Snyder aesthetic with an art house twist and film history vibe. Very cool visuals but I'm not a big fan of the trailer. I give the trailer points for selling the spectacle but I'm subtracting points for It beating me over the head with subtext. After the trailer, I can't shake the feeling that this movie might be hella pretentious and long winded. Instead of being on the nose (visual and dialogue wise) about America falling, I wish it would've just set up the story/conflict between the antagonist and protagonist and left the subtext for the audience to discover at the IMAX. It's a Francis Ford Coppola movie so it's a day 1 viewing for me. But I'm keeping my expectations in check. The cinematographer Mihai Mălaimare Jr is my early pick for MVP of this movie.

Had electricity, sensational images, profound scale. All that packed into 2 hours feels promising to me. Three or three-and-a-half and I’d be worried. But damn. Trailers can be such audacious liars. Let’s hope there’s enough humor, pace, and reins on pretense.

I loved the trailer. It reminds me of Apocalypse Now in terms of its psychedelic ambition. Overall, I’m so excited for the movies this year. So many talented directors are releasing stuff. I’m most excited for Kinds of Kindness and Megalopolis. I don’t go to the theaters much anymore but I have to for those two.

Whether or not this thing finds favour with critics, I can't imagine it will be a box office smash. We just don't live in a world any more where expensive passion projects such as this make their money back - the economics have unfortunately changed since Coppola first dreamed up this project. Even so, I applaud the artistic and financial courage in dropping this so late in his career - no milquetoast Tarantino 10-film-and-we're-done attitude here; Coppola's going out swinging for the fences and even if his legacy might be 'threatened' by a bloated Ozymandias, it will be richer for the attempt.

Looks very ambitious but reminds me of "Blade Runner" (the original) with elements of "Matrix". Curious to see what he's done but very sceptical about it.

Alexandros Alexandropoulos

It looks grandiose, bombastic, self-indulgent, potentially risible. And I can't wait! I don't care if this turns out to be a masterpiece or a mess - I admire its ambition and wish more filmmakers had Coppola's balls and tenacity.

I'm not as wowed as some of the early reactions have been. I'm definitely excited and happy its one step closer to happening. Looks like Shia LaBeouf will have a bigger role in it then I anticipated. Also glad I'm not the only one seeing the visual parallels to Blade Runner - https://twitter.com/LostInFilm/status/1790316531437429228

It’ll certainly be interesting at any rate, a kind of Ancient Rome meets Art Deco fantasia about the fight to save civilization. I don’t know, I remain skeptical. I doubt this film will reveal itself as another Apocalypse Now, the other chaotic production written off as a train wreck that Coppola managed to turn into an artistic triumph. More likely this will be given a mixed reaction and later be thought of as an ambitious failure along the lines of Blonde, Babylon, and Beau Is Afraid—all films that didn’t meet their goals but are endlessly fascinating for the artistry and craftsmanship that went into making them.

Currently, I’m at a point of cautious optimism….but MAN does it look good! Lol It also helps that I have almost no idea what it’s actually about. From the little bit I’ve read, it kinda sounds almost Ayn Rand inspired (Fountainhead) so that’s interesting. But I have to remind myself to not get my hopes too high. It’s easy to get sucked in to the cool aesthetics and the fact that it’s Coppola, but the fact that no American distributor wanted it has me concerned…

i’m happy for the director. he really deserves it. i’m not impressed in the least bit and think the whole idea is out of date but really happy to see a life long project become reality.
