Funny Fact

When I was 14 I saw the movie TAXI, starring Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah. Call it a guilty pleasure, if you will. Sadly, I know the film inside and out. Initially I thought it was a remake of TAXI DRIVER, which I had never seen at the time. So I went into TAXI DRIVER a couple years later thinking I was going to get a silly cop movie lol. What movie did you go into thinking it was going to be one thing, but it turned out you had been very misinformed?

When I was a kid, I recall a lot of questionable movies that were in that Family/Kids aisle at Blockbuster. Particularly the anime films. Likely the employees saw animated characters on the VHS covers and threw it in the kids pile. It happened once that a friend of mine was at Blockbuster when he was in Elementary school. His mom just wanted to keep him occupied, so she went to the Family/Kids section, and randomly grabbed AKIRA. He sat down to watch it, and needless to say, he was traumatized for years. That story makes me laugh, because it doesn't surprise me. Them Blockbuster employees playing some kind of emotional Russian roulette with the kids lol. But it's another good example.

Wow, now that's hilarious.

I can’t be the only one who tried watching the Japanese movie “House” and saw the unrelated American movie “House” instead, right? It’s classic 80’s cheese, I was really thinking to myself “I’m having a good time with this, but THIS is that really experimental film that everybody loves so much???”

I walked into Parasite with no expectations. Was told to not know a single thing. I even looked away next to the giant poster by the theater, so I wouldnt have any clues.

that's fantastic.

I watched it with my ex but wouldnt let him look at the cover of the film. So I downloaded it while he closed his eyes. Though knowing it was so secretive naturally made him pointedly curious about what would happen. But even so, I think it's the ideal way to experience it. Had no idea what kind of film it was.

My older sister had piano lessons every Saturday when we were kids. I had to go with her and would end up in the arcade or at this movie theatre that rarely had anything I wanted to see. Except this one weekend, they had Kickboxer 2! The poster had the bad guy from Kickboxer 1 on it so I just knew it was going to be good. Boy was I surprised when it was revealed JCVD had been killed off shortly after the events of Kickboxer 1 and that goofy dork Cody from the TGIF show Step by Step was the lead. I was pissed off! 🤣

The most recent film to catch me out was Poor Things, I had only watched one trailer for it like 6 months before, which I barely remembered, I knew Emma won an Oscar but that was about it, I didn't even glance at the rating. I watched it with my mum cause I had for some reason assumed it was a family friendly reworking of Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein with a light Jules Verne backdrop - how very wrong I was. Not sure why but when I was about 8 or 9 my brother (who is quite a bit older) took me to a video store and let me choose any film to rent - naturally I chose a horror film called The Imp (in the US it was called Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama.) I only vaguely recall one weird sex scene now (though I guess the fact I still recall it would suggest it had a major impact on me at the time) but I know there was a bunch of weird stuff in that film I should definitely not have seen as a kid lol. I should probably revisit it at some point and see if I can work out if any of its scenes and themes had a lasting effect on me.

My friend told me American beauty was like field of dreams lol.

I want to hear from the people who thought they were watching Disney's Frozen and actually got that movie where people get stranded on a ski lift. I think the obvious examples are things like Cabin in the Woods, In Bruges, The Long Goodbye...stuff like that, where you see the positive reviews but aren't aware of the satirical angle so you go into it expecting something serious and then end up very confused by the tone.

I already like going into certain movies completely blind, so it’s a common occurrence for me. I went into Parasite thinking it was a science fiction horror film (because it’s Bong Joon-Ho) so after the first hour I was like, “uhh, where’s the sci-fi?”. I enjoyed the twists and turns even more after realizing it was a social satire. Also happened with 2015’s Room. I assumed it was a dystopian future and the characters were quarantined because of a deadly pandemic. So I was able to watch the movie from the viewpoint of the kid, because he didn’t really know what was going on either.

Pulp Fiction I remember as a teenager renting it at Blockbuster, knowing nothing about Tarantino. I just knew that people loved Kill Bill at the time and that a lot of people thought Pulp Fiction should've beat Forrest Gump for Best Picture. Also the DVD I picked up had no pictures of the movie on it just a white case that said Pulp Fiction w/ the Blockbuster logo. Me being naive assumed it would be a martial arts movie because obviously that's the only type of movie this guy makes. Sure enough I go home and watch it and immediately had a new favorite movie. I remember letting the credits roll and have it go to the home screen only for me to press play and watch the whole thing all over again. It was a great Friday night indeed. I remember then going back the next week and renting Reservoir Dogs and Halloween.

Watched it after first learning about it from Maggie's review of it and you should've seen my face when that climax played out. I even tweeted about it back when I still had Twitter on her page "WTF was that!" like Heather in that scene from The Blair Witch Project.

That's an easy one for me and I'm sure I'm not the only kid who made the same mistake. How many kids saw Candyman because it reminded them of Willy Wonka and the song The Candy Man? Caught it randomly on tv back in 7th or 8th grade and watched it with my parents who were starting to let me watch more violent R rated films but they always objected if there was sex or even any kind of naked boob on screen in any manner which unbeknownst to them was present in the film. I'd already seen several slashers at that point so I wasn't scarred by it but I've never forgotten it. Haven't rewatched it since so I'm curious to see if it holds up.

I don’t think I had that kind of experience where I rented something that turned out to be far different from what I expected. But it does remind me of something I’ve wanted to do since I’ve seen the movie. I want to watch the movie Audition with someone who has absolutely no idea what kind of movie it is and see their initial reaction to the first third, where they think they’re watching some romantic dramedy. And then I want to see their reaction to the turning point of the movie: when the sack moves. And then I want to see their reaction when they realize they’re watching one of the most disturbing horror movies ever made. I think it’d be hilarious, but if it’s a date it would most likely be a dealbreaker.

It’s not cinema, but I once got a magazine at Walmart that had Nintendo characters on it when I was a kid. Apparently it was racy and I had no idea. It was strange because it had Donkey Kong, Mario, and those other characters. My parents went through it page by page cutting out anything inappropriate, then let us look through it. Imagine going through a magazine with a bunch of holes in it, being curious about what was there.
