Added 2024-09-02 22:16:01 +0000 UTCI have several classic reviews I’d like to tackle within the next year if I have time. One of them would be a Kurosawa film. The only review for a film of his that I’ve done was RAN. One of my favorites. But if I were to do another, what would you like to see?

I am going to make kind of an odd suggestion. Kurosawa made a propaganda film during WWII called The Most Beautiful. I found this a fascinating and revealing movie because of its positivity in contrast to anti-Japanese propaganda films of Hollywood -- especially cartoons like Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips or Scrap the Japs (a Popeye film). I really think that the contrast is telling and can lend itself to interesting analysis.

2024-09-03 18:49:28 +0000 UTCThe Bad Sleep Well! This is actually my favorite Kurosawa film. I love psychological revenge films where a person sets out to ruin someone's life without physically harming them ( eg The Gift and Promising Young Woman), and this is the best of those.

Red Beard is probably his most emotionally poignient film and features the best performance of Toshiro Mifune's career. Ikiru is also deeply moving and one of the most beautiful black and white films I've ever seen.

2024-09-03 00:02:45 +0000 UTCMy choice would be Seven Samurai, one of the greatest action movies ever. But I’ll put forth another film as well, a lesser known one called Stray Dog, which was a detective thriller starring Mifune and Shimura that he did in the years immediately following WWII.

2024-09-02 23:01:51 +0000 UTCMy personal favorite is High and Low. You can definitely see how he influenced Fincher w/ Seven and other films like that. Also Spike Lee just finished doing a remake and I think it’s coming out next year. You could review it before it comes out.
