SMILE
Added 2024-10-02 17:00:08 +0000 UTCWho has seen the first one from last year and what did you think of it? I didn't like it much, but there were things I enjoyed in it. Weirdly I do want to see the sequel.

2024-10-15 00:25:30 +0000 UTCI'll be watching for sure! Hey, it's Halloween season - all things fun, gory, silly, corny, WHY NOT?? Smile 2 (with a few shots of bourbon) will make for a great go at the movies. Lol.

2024-10-04 14:48:35 +0000 UTCI guess this is why some people are David Lynch fans and some are not. Because the smile thing is my kryptonite. Though...this movie failed to affect me at all

2024-10-04 03:49:25 +0000 UTCSomehow missed the boat on the first. So haven’t really thought about the 2nd. Something about the “scary smile” thing felt corny and gimmicky to me. I’ll prolly see both in the next few week cause regal unlimited

2024-10-02 20:22:14 +0000 UTCI thought the ending was the best part of the film. When Rose thinks she’s figured out what she has to do to beat this curse and … well, they made a sequel for a reason.

2024-10-02 19:29:06 +0000 UTCTHAT scene with Kal Penn had me laughing so hard in the theater that I almost apologized to the people sitting next to me lol

2024-10-02 17:58:46 +0000 UTCI'm not big into horror movies but I liked Smile more than I thought I would. The central premise of trauma acting as a supernatural curse that leads to more trauma has a lot of potential. They portrayed the story in a way that was so grim, it's probably one of the most disturbing "moods" to a movie I've seen (again, as someone who doesn't spend much time watching horror). I was disappointed with the final 30 minutes because I don't think the mystical stuff was needed, but above average overall. I also remember the "smile" stuff wasn't integrated well into the rest of the movie's concept. Seems they started with "what would be weird?" and worked backwards. Maybe the sequel will be more cohesive.

2024-10-02 17:18:22 +0000 UTCThe message I got is that no matter how much work you do and how much you try to improve yourself you'll always wind up losing the mental health battle, which definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

2024-10-02 17:13:17 +0000 UTCyeah. I remember bits of it very well. Other parts of it not so much. Not the best sign. But also not the worst.

2024-10-02 17:09:47 +0000 UTCHaha so I need to go back and revisit it. I can't remember a lot of the second half. So I'll take your word for it until then

2024-10-02 17:09:12 +0000 UTCI thought the original was alright. I remember going in with low expectations and walked out thinking it could've been a lot worse. I thought Sosie Bacon & Kyle Gallner did the best they could. I think as far as horror movies released in 2022 go it's certainly better than mediocre and garbage such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre that was on Netflix, The Invitation, Halloween Ends, the Firestarter remake & Prey for the Devil but I liked Nope, Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Pearl & Barbarian far more. I will admit though that I feel like if I had paid full price for a ticket rather than an early matinee I probably would've disliked it more? I am planning on re-watching it and the Terrifier films in preparation for their respective sequels coming out over the next two weeks.

2024-10-02 17:08:53 +0000 UTCyeah great marketing. Agreed. When I was little...the idea of a person just standing at the end of a hallway grinning at you like that...was the most terrifying thing to me. I wish the movie tapped more into my nightmares as a kid but....nah, it was silly. Fun though.

2024-10-02 17:08:43 +0000 UTCI liked it, but it's certainly very flawed. To me it felt like a middle ground between the kind of art house "mental health" horror we get from A24, and the kind of jumpscare-a-thon teen horror we get from, like, The Bye Bye Man etc. I think it fumbles the mental illness metaphor a lot in the last act, but there are some really effective scares and some genuinely horrifying imagery that I loved. It definitely felt a bit "safe" though. It feels like it might have been studio-noted, and if that's the case I'd love to see a director's cut. I've actually heard the sequel is an improvement, which is exciting. Now that he delivered one hit, maybe he has more freedom to really explore the premise and take some risks?

2024-10-02 17:06:19 +0000 UTCI thought the mix of campy humor and serious themes of suicide and mental illness were handled horribly

2024-10-02 17:05:06 +0000 UTCi thought the marketing campaign was the best thing about it. Very underwhelming on first watch. Maybe i'll try again.

2024-10-02 17:01:52 +0000 UTCMaybe I’m looking too deep into this but the main message I got was “Mentally ill people shouldn’t have children”
