* * *
They had smiled as they walked up to you. Their eyes glittered in the lights from the bar, looking straight into yours. “Hey, nice to meet you.” They offered their hand and you shook, unsure why they had asked for this consultation meeting in a bar of all places.
They sat at the booth with you, but didn’t seem to be in any rush to begin talking shop. Instead, they talked at length about wanting to come here. Their eyes rarely left your own, and you found yourself sucked in to their gaze. It was so easy to stare.
Their voice had this lilting quality. And as they spoke, you found your concentration focused on them. Your thoughts were draining away, slowly, but surely. They were grinning at you as they said “Isn’t it funny, the things that take up our concentration?”
As they waited for a response, they took a sip of their wine, looking down, and then back up at you. You stammered, searching for a response, but they cut across your train of thought. “Of course, sometimes, our concentration is very easy to take, isn’t it?”
You found yourself nodding as they did the same, agreeing with them. They had taken your concentration. They talked about what they could do for you, and it all sounded so good. Though, everything they said seemed to sound good. It was easy to listen to them.
As the meeting drew to a close, they handed you a tablet with the details of what you had gone over. What you were offering was generous, very generous. But you knew they deserved it. As they walked away, leaving you with the bill, you knew you’d see them again soon.
