If so, should they be short videos or simpler gifs, like the image above?

Not all the time. You can do the animations on some of them, but only if the theme is right. This story is one example since the theme is video game. If you want to do the animation then it's up to you, but not too much

2016-09-30 21:23:39 +0000 UTCTweaking the original audio is a very nice touch indeed, including what I'd call the sonic coin collecting noise at the start and what I assume is Black Cat being hit noises throughout the side scroll and some other noise which I figure is the purple dudes entering the scene/taunting the character. At about 0.5 speed the audio track does sound a bit like early 90s porn music :)
