Miller's Children and a Supreme Court Ruling

THANK YOU to our new Patreon supporters!  First we want to share how grateful we are that the wheels of justice are turning, and that Chad and Lori Daybell have been charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder. Our thoughts are with the victims.

This unedited midnight snack we are posting is not about Chad or Lori, but was recorded exactly one week ago at our dining room table. It begins with Lauren sharing some of her thoughts about the tragic murder of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey,  and transitions into a discussion about "Miller's Children" and a recent ruling made by the Supreme Court last month that has been on Dr. John's mind. Let us know your thoughts, or any questions you might have.

Miller's Children and a Supreme Court Ruling

There's no easy answer to this dilemma. My observations are that 1: in the United States, we do not value human life. We are quick to send people to death row. That is also not an easy topic to answer, but let me try. It seems that in this country, and ESPECIALLY with the Christian conservatives, there is much more value placed on a zygote, and embryo, and a fetus that cannot survive outside the womb. But once those baby feet hit oxygen, their feelings suddenly change to a "you're on your own" philosophy. That same life that cannot survive outside the womb, is suddenly of no consequence to them. If that fetus is born to a family that turns it into an angry adolescent or teen or young person, and that person then lashes out and kills, well then, it's execution. They don't place value on a 2 y/o who goes hungry, they don't place value on the 5 y/o that goes coatless, they don't place value on the 13 y/o who has been raped repeatedly, by someone who was supposed to care for them. There is no value to these lives, so why should these lives value others?? Also, in this country, there never seems to be money for social programs. To ask the government (especially 1 party) to consider spending on after school programs, or parenting programs, or mental health programs, is often met with the attitude of free loading, resource sucking, lazy "welfare" attitudes. Sure, we can spend BILLIONS of tax dollars on multi BILLION dollar corporate welfare, but if it is for the good of an individual, forget it. Our priorities in this country are so off base, it's no wonder we produce Aiden, after Aiden, after Aiden. I think that in cases like Aiden's, maybe there is a program in prison to help us understand what it was about Aiden's personality that would make him do this. What was he born with, how was that fostered, and how was it turned into such rage? He didn't just do this to a random person. He did this to his friend. Why? If there were some sort of program in prison to help us understand, and help him understand, maybe that would be worth while to our society. And not just Aiden's case, and not just adolescent cases. If there was a program, or programs, that rehabilitate our prisoners, maybe that would be beneficial. We are a punitive country. And the reason we are a punitive country is because we do not value human life in this county.

I love that you caught that. In an edited convo, this is the stuff that would disappear While he's pretty good, Dr. John doesn't ALWAYS listen ... lol.. And yes--a great comparison to Aiden's snapchat is the 4 door jeep wrangler status update from J Mow.

Lauren and John Matthias

I’m right here

Lori Hellis

Doesn’t Aiden’s Snapchat remind you of Jason Mow’s FB post “Looking for a 4 door Jeep Wrangler. Does anybody know a guy? “. And I laughed out loud when Lauren told Dr. John don’t use Aiden as an example. Dr. John says lets use Aiden as an example. Lauren says in a small voice I told you don’t use Aiden as an example.

Two heinous cases from my neck of the woods (central NH) had re-evaluations due to the Miller decision: the Dartmouth murders and the Mont Vernon machete attack. Both cases had pairs of teenaged boys committing thrill-kills. I have deeply mixed feelings about the Miller decision, given the trauma of these murders bit alsomy understanding from working with kids that their ethical development is very tenuous and fragile.

I very recently either read or heard on a podcast that when an intervention is done EARLY with a juvenile, it is possible to steer them away from the road of crime they are going down. Dr, John had mentioned this research in one of your podcasts and I found this information to be quite hopeful and good news really. So this brings up the possible circumstances that this young boy could have changed his ways of crime, murder, fantasies, rage, had he had someone noticed that he was in trouble. It will be extremely interesting to me to learn about his family of origin and school performance to analyze just what was going on with this child. Were there any signs of abnormal behavior ahead of time? There must have been something that could have triggered a red flag to the adults around him. I’ve already listened to both of your episodes on this horrific case. As usual, Im a little skewed and listened to the second one first, so these are my thoughts after listening to both episodes. There’s got to be a way we, as a society, can do better with these children. Lauren, thank you for your always sensitive and insightful comments about Tristan Bailey.

We just shared an update due to the new information. So so sad.

Lauren and John Matthias

We saw that today, and want to share an update soon. It is horrific.

Have you seen the latest developments on the Tristyn Bailey case? 😞 Things are a lot worse. Grand Jury returned that he is now charged as an adult and his charge has been upgraded to first degree murder. She was brutally stabbed 114 times 😭

I have to agree that teenagers have a very different brain than an adult, and as a society we should try to rehabilitate them, and give them therapy, and re-examine them as adults to see if they are changed.
