Josh Duggar Guilty Verdict: A discussion with Patreon member Shellie G

Guest Shellie G (also a Hidden True Crime Patreon member) talks with Lauren Matthias about her time in the Independent Christian Baptist faith, and what Josh Duggar's guilty verdict means to her as a Christian woman.

This was released on YouTube as well. Here it is ad-free for our Patreon supporters, and in audio form so you can use our RSS feed.

Many are asking where our other Patreon episode is about Josh Duggar. Here is the unedited conversation John and Lauren had in May, right after charges came down: https://www.patreon.com/posts/dr-john-matthias-51120534?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copy_to_clipboard&utm_campaign=postshare

Independent Baptists and evangelical movement have been around a LOT longer than the early 2000s.

Faith can move mountains if you can find comfort in your faith that is a powerful medicine. To deprive your children of that seems cruel .I don't believe everything in the bible is as it's written but I do find comfort in believing that there is a power greater than ourselves that can restore us to sanity , some cannot have such a broad understanding but most of us can find comfort is just believing in a higher power it's when you can't apply common sense along with your faith that you get into dangerous religious territory.

P.S. I listened to Julia Sweeney’s Letting Go of God on Audible. Food for thought.

I agree, Deborah, religion is not necessary to leading a good life. Your point about religion flying people into buildings and science flying them to the moon is well taken. I do believe in God but religion, not so much.

Kate FitzGerald

Christopher Hitchens to me said it correctly. Religion poisons everything,,,, Just be a good human being. To me personally im a humanist. Religion is not something children should be indoctronated into its child abuse imo. Let kids grow up without inflicting your personal beliefs on them. Religion flies people into building. Science flies people to the moon. There is absolutely zero evidence for a god. You cant prove a negative. Have faith in each other the here and now. There is no need for a god .We are the people living on our amazing planet. You get one life i dont understand why grown adults are so determined to live in a fairytail. With this imaginary sky daddy watching and judging you. I m Athiest so i guess this all loving god cant wait to send me to the pits of hell when i die.To burn for eternity. Such a loving god.

Rebecca, I think there is a fine line between religion and cult. The LDS Faith is not alone in having a troubled past. History is littered with atrocities in the name of a Deity. How about the Crusades? I left the Roman Catholic Church when the white smoke went for Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI). As head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, Ratzinger was the chief architect of the Church’s abysmal response to the sex abuse scandal. Dr John and Lauren were on an interesting podcast, Mormon Stories. Dr Dehlin, the podcaster, quoted Steven Weinberg, “With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion.” There is no easy answer to this but I think Anna who was interviewed by Lauren has a good point. In living your faith, you must constantly be “recalculating” or thinking deeply about how we live our lives. If memory serves, one of the Prophets taught that. Bad things happen in any faith when the faithful relinquish their personal responsibility to examine their own actions and give their minds over to some higher authority.

Kate FitzGerald

Surely other men in his community must have seen the escape from responsibility as something fabulous. Something so good that it could bind them tighter to the religion too. The slaughter of their own family members justified by “ . . . God told me to . . .” really boggles the mind. Other faiths at least blame the devil when it comes to evil acts. That they think that they will become gods is even more unnerving. As tonight’s discussion proved, any time mere mortals believe they can speak God’s mind and that women are not the equal partner of men, the likelihood of horrific behaviors increase exponentially. Where are the higher angels of humankind? Why are so many religions rolling in the mud of sexually abusing children? Sexually abusing and coercively controlling women? If this is religion, we all need to leave it behind. Why not leave all brutality, beastiality, cruelty in all its forms in the venue of evil with Satan holding those cards. Why not have God be the source of all love, all kindnesses, all gentleness and affection? Why not have God protect the children, the women, the weak, the differently abled by commandment? Oh yeah . . . There is that Ten Commandment thing. One would think that so called followers might try to comply. If a man claims to be a prophet in direct communication with God, it does seem to be very likely that he is heading up a cult. Even a big trillion dollar cult.

A modern day saying, cleaned up for public consumption, comes to something along the lines that he must have been thinking with his genitalia.

I have recently read Under the Banner of Heaven. I next plan to read The Mountain Meadows Massacre by Juanita Brooks. I am retired from public school teaching and a long career in banking. I had always thought of the Mormons/ LDS as a group of people persecuted for their polygamy. Unless these books are very unbalanced, it now seems to me that the Mormons/LDS made many problems everywhere they went. That it was ok to steal, cheat, lie and murder any of the gentiles they encountered. It was also ok to blame their murderous rampages on our original citizens. It is now clearly no surprise that people across the country fought them and drove them West. It seems that Joseph Smith discovered through his unbridled sex drive that polygamy could prevent him from falling into adultery, and potentially even excuse incest.
