DEATH CAP MUSHROOM DEATHS: ACCIDENT OR ATROCITY? Forensic psychologist Dr John Matthias weighs in

I love that you are mentioning Monty Python. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to you two :)

Betsy trogden

I thought I had seen somewhere that his family did not like her. If that is the case, perhaps she killed out of hatred of his family. Maybe she blamed them for the breakup of her marriage. It would also punish the husband whether or not he died.

Laura Carson

I wonder if she didn’t intend to kill them and dehydrated the mushrooms thinking she would just powder a few mis them in with the safe ones she brought and just make them sick, but the dehydration process made them more potent and she accidentally killed them. Maybe she just wanted to make her in-laws sick and reliant on her for help and in turn that would make them warm to her again .

@Teejay

If he pulled out a day or 2 before, I am at a loss as to why she would follow though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ If it was just that he didn’t come or only backed out right before, it would make more sense to me. Wow… thanks for that piece of info about the timing… hmmmmm.

Jana Smith

Yep he backed out- that’s why she was charged with one attempted murder charged on his from the same dinner the others died. Cos she had planned for him to be there.

I’ve wondered the same. She’s said to be highly intelligent. She’s known to have foraged mushrooms; she should be able to identify the death-cap. Even if they were dried, she rehydrated them. So, it’s obvious this was done purposely. Maybe she wanted to get caught? Maybe she’s arrogant and thought she would outsmart everyone by “eating the same meal”? Do we know what the survivor has said about the meal?

Moon Child

From what I’ve heard he pulled out at least a day or two before the dinner. I’m not sure he fully suspected her poisoning in the past- as doctors didn’t pick up on it. So he may not have wanted his family- But if he did? “Don’t go to dinner she may kill you all “ I’m sure they’d think that was paranoid and ridiculous “So you think she’s going to poisonous us all openly at her dinner table? You think she would get away with that?” If he didn’t warn them I bet he’s feeling terrible.

Tad Auty

Yes 3 prior attempts in 21 and 22 plus another charge because he was sposed to be at the dinner

Tad Auty

Apparently she has been charged with previous attempts to cause harm to people ?

@Teejay

I didn’t know this

Kathleen Liakos

I heard that the husband backed out of the meal......again, not sure if my information is correct.

Mary

Didn't she say that her kids ate it the next day? So much info around, not sure what is fact or not. Glad we will get facts later.

Mary

I didn't realize she has been charged for previous poisonings!! WOW

Mary

I have heard that she had experience in foraging for mushrooms and there was a food dehydrator… so it seems she had she had the knowledge… can’t see how it could be accidental. I am wondering if she intended for all of them to die together. Is it known when the estranged husband backed out of the dinner? Too late to stop everyone else from eating? Early enough to not eat it herself? Maybe the husband not coming threw off the plan for herself to die also… ?

Jana Smith

Interesting question- but also- she’s been charged with poisoning her husband on 3 prior occasions in 2021-2022 one of which almost killed him. Looking forward to Johns take on this!

Tad Auty

Wondering about her motive. Do we know if she was she a victim of spousal abuse? I think she was separated from her husband. (Maybe divorced?) Was she the beneficiary of any of her husbands life insurance policies?

Alicia Walker

I don’t know much about this case, looking forward to learning about it. If this is any way related to Visions of Glory my mind will be blown! (This is meant to be a joke 😂).

Pppmomof3

Why the in laws? What not just the husband? This seems off.

Kathleen Liakos

Something to think about. Beef Wellington is a time consuming and complicated dish to prepare. It definitely requires time management skills. If she did this, and it wasn’t an accident, she had many many many opportunities to change her mind

Laurey Moles

I was at a live show in A theatre in Ireland with a forensics lecture Jennifer Reese. She spoke about the classification of serial killers and the difference between mass Killers, spree killers and serial killers. If this lady is guilty, how would her crimes be classified? Would her crimes be considered a mass killing because it was the same weapon with multiple people, at the same time in the same location? Can you get a crossover of mass killer and mission oriented killer? Also do you have recommended further Reading on this topic? Or is that a ridiculously broad question lol 🤣

Rachel Meadows

What I don’t understand is- if it was intentional, why would someone with her level of intelligence do it at her house and think she could get away with it? Could it be that because her husband survived the other 3 alleged poisoning? And wasn’t caught- did she think they’d just get sick ? Or it wouldn’t be investigated ?! I just can’t get past that she’s done it in her own home- it’s like zero attempt to not be caught.
