I would love a Dr. John deep dive into Keyes

Cosmo's ma

Yeah! Israel Keyes…I haven’t heard of him! And he was from Utah?! Wow!

Kathy Stay

Do you have Kouri Richins hair?!

Kathy Stay

People use 'evil' to describe acts and the outcomes, but I feel like evil is more in the intent. For me, evil is when you are consciously and cognitively doing these cruel actions. Where you know the pain you're going to cause - emotionally and physically - and you continue to do it, or worse, do it BECAUSE of it. Also, I've always found it amazing that, despite the huge publicity of Ted Bundy, so many people ignore some of the most gruesome aspects of his crimes. Most people speak of this clean cut guy who hunted young women and know him for his berserker phase at FSU, but rarely do they speak of what he did with the bodies afterwards, and for how long he would revisit them, and I don't understand why.

Louise Grills

I don't know about Israel Keyes being evil. He's the one I'm most baffled about. He never and I mean NEVER talked about his father. According to his girlfriend he did talk to his mother regularly and tried to gain her respect or some appreciation from her. He was the oldest boy of all of his siblings and practically had to raise them. He didn't only hunt, he had to work and give his money to the parents. They lived outside in a tent with his sisters in the summer in rain, cold, mud. He had hand me down clothes. His toes were deformed because when he was a toddler he never had shoes that fit him. He seemed to care about his daughter. One of the first crimes he committed was raping a young girl and he wanted to kill her, but she was able to talk him out of it. She told him that she doesn't understand why he did this, he's a good looking guy and she would have gone out with him, had he asked. And he let her go. Israel is super confusing, because it seems like he had positive emotions towards some people, but his crimes were absolutely horrible. He's the most confusing serial killer for me.

HeartFelt Condolences for the tragic loss of your young brother...

Ana Franco

School shooters are often incense, and I think Kohberger is too

Carolyn Moe

I heard Keyes didn't want his daughter to know what he had done

Carolyn Moe

Once again, the profound nature of “our” talks deeply touches my heart! Thank you so much for all you do for us out here in “listening land”.

Mrs. G

100% agree.

Charlotte Castle

Not being rude but you do know that people with serious mental illnesses are much more likely to have victims of crime then perpetrators of it? Those that do commit crime are definitely in the minority.

Charlotte Castle

The army taught him it's ok to kill humans and dehumanize them. Maybe soldiers can compartmentalize the ruthless violence they do, but then be family men

Matt B

Love you both!! 😍

Lizzy

We talk a lot on here about why we are obsessed with true crime, and why especially women. And I think one reason for me is that as a woman, I don't want to become a victim. And my brain thinks if I could just only understand the psyche of a serial killer, then I can notice it and avoid it. Is this logical? No. But for some reason, my brain feels comforted with a false sense of security when I learn what makes them tick.

TMac

Oh man I would buy a Dr John book so freaking fast!!

Amy

Dr John soothes my soul. When he comes on I’m filled with hope and I’m so grateful people like him who are compassionate and empathetic still exist.

CL

I too have always found Israel Keys to be so so so very fascinating and crazy demonic. Yet, quite handsome, super smart, he was allegedly quite the carpenter. He was naturally athletic and so forward thinking. And allegedly quite the girl dad?! Wow. And the way he completed suicide with his note and clues left behind. Mind blown. I think there could be more un known murders Keys is responsible for.

Amy Martin

Not that I think there is a single funny thing about Brian Kohberger, except for the fact that he’s a fool.

Mary Hatchet

Maybe it’s the sleep gummy, but Dr. John, I was thinking of your idea of a character in a book or show based on Brian Kohberger, and I had to think that it was at least like part comedy, maybe a sitcom, and then I thought: Mr. Bean. Brian Kohberger driving around in a teeny tiny car, making his plans… 🚙

Mary Hatchet

(It’s very cute!!)

Mary Hatchet

Lauren, you need a pink princess phone to go with your retainer 💖

Mary Hatchet

Lauren and Dr. John thank you for explaining why we listen to the difficult crimes. Dean Kuntz is one of my favorite author. My ex Narrcissest told me worldly books and podcast are stupidity. I disagree. I loved Lauren's book, and looking forward to Dr. John's book. Thank you to you both, you keep me sane.

Danni Hull

I totally agree Kohberger thinks he is smarter than everyone else & he truly believes he will get away with this. It makes me ill ghat he walks in the courtroom in his suit like he owns the room.. I know his lawyer is doing her job but she’s ridiculous. Thank goodness this judge seems to have control of the courtroom.

Kay Yorn

OMG if Dr John wrote a book I would buy it in 2 seconds!!! Take my money 💵💸💵

Cassidy DeShazo

What a great episode .. I had just finished episode 8 of Payne Lindsey’s Monster podcast series on BTK .. it’s from the view of the TV personalities that covered Witchita during the time of the killings … the question of why ….who is this perpetrator.. the interview w the victims … even John Douglas .. and Kerri Rawson .. to try to understand .. Dennis Rader … BTK .. to see a man methodically .. before a judge .. describe every moment of 10 murders …as if these victims were of no matter .. but placing great value of someone not cheating or lying to him in their correspondence.. just when I think .. I somewhat understand the human mind … I do not .. but I must try !

Christy Aiken

So very scary. But at least he is not president of the US - or his henchmen

Jen C

Fascinating discussion. I'll buy your books! I'll be your editor, too! My ex had late onset schizophrenia (not a criminal, just suffering extremely). I was telling a coworker about him and she said she would have run away at top speed. But when you grow up around bipolar disorder in the family, you don't realize potential danger. Apparently both of us had families with major mental illness, suicide, luckily few criminals. Normal looks different to us.

Carla Perkins

Love your sense of humor, Lauren. Always enjoy learning from John. 💙💙💙

Laren Dee Barton

Serial killers, have always been really interesting, to me. My family teases me, that if an animal, is harmed in a movie- I can’t handle it- BUT, I fall asleep, to serial killer documentaries. 😜

CG1

We speculate he might have become a serial killer.

Lauren and John Matthias

I'd read it! You'd be an excellent author, Dr. John.

Christine Balog

My ex is a surgeon He is extremely intelligent and charming I Worked with him for a while in the operating room and I know that surgeons are trained to be calm and collected but this man is just something else The feeling you have when you are around people who lack empathy is very uneasy and you can’t quite put your finger on it or describe it in words. You just feel it It is the most frightening feeling i have ever felt. At first I made excuses for him and why he would respond and act the way he did. But that was my first mistake. Well because I have empathy so I automatically assumed he did as well. So when i realised i was transferring my own humanity onto him. The light bulb went on. But at the same time when I realised who he really is That was the moment I knew I was in danger. These people are so deeply committed to get what they want from you that you don’t stand a chance. Because normally people don’t go about their lives trying to manipulate and destroy others just because they can. But these individuals do They don’t know anything else. And that is so very scary.

Vala Hauksdóttir

Keyes, to me, might be the most terrifying serial killer. Curious I'd Dr John and you (Lauren) have listened to True Crime Bullsh*t podcast. My husband and I took a deep dive into it - would love to know your thoughts. Why do you think the FBI isn't releasing everything they know? Why did they hold onto it for so long? And who do you think is paying for the lawyers fees to keep it all wrapped up? I have so many questions. Love that you guys share these convos with us. I've always had a curiosity/fascination with these types of individuals and their crimes.

Rena Dwelle

I am really glad that Israel Keyes is dead. I am also glad that Rex Huberman is locked up And Bryan Kohberger too These men are so dangerous and done the most horrific crimes possible. They don’t have a conscience or any moral compass whatsoever. They are animals Hunters Evil to the core. Yes they mask emotions but are evil inside When people don’t have empathy they are just not human. Shallow manikins.

Vala Hauksdóttir

“Hell is empathy and all the devils are here” William Shakespeare …

Vala Hauksdóttir

Koberger is a mass Killer, not a serial killer.

Ronald Helm

I agree with Dr. John we can understand people and ourselves by looking at crimes and criminals. In the past five years I had to face really hard and difficult issues. I really took a look at generational trauma and family history and had to come to terms with loss and grief. We are all intertwined. I think even as a child, mystery books fascinated me. I also grew up in a somewhat isolated area that was also on the outskirts of a major city but rural. Hearing and seeing serial killers in the news and in my community. It always bothered me, but life goes on. I think raising a family and being involved with a job and children life becomes busy and hectic. Now, as I age and the reality of life becomes different with loss and some wisdom. ( I say wisdom because you truly do learn what is important and what isn’t.) True crime is interesting to me to learn human behavior. Or inhuman behavior? I had not known about Israel Keyes. Maybe heard about him but not in depth. BK is very interesting and I do believe he is guilty based on what we do know. I think he definitely planned the murders. He may have been surprised by the door dash and how many people were in the house but he had studied and watched the girls. I also think he has committed other crimes. Just my opinion. Thank you to Dr. John and Lauren for talking about subjects that people dub taboo. Back when these things were not discussed. How do you overcome fears or change behaviors or see red flags without discussing? Today’s technology with DNA and modern cellphones which are cameras and gps makes it harder and harder to be anonymous. Lauren needs some good sleep with her drink and Dr. John needs alone time for reading and writing. I understand, I love to write. May you both enjoy rest and relaxation. Until next time, stay safe and healthy.

Kay Louise

Thank you Lauren and John. Great way to wake up without having to hit the snooze button half a dozen times!

JenAus

"That's how behind the scenes this is" lol 🤣🩷love you guys!

cassidyrae21

Thanks. John has been wanting to do a podcast on Keyes for some time. There is a podcast out that’s fairly new on Deviant. Check it out! For those who want to learn of a relatively lowkey/unknown serial killer should watch the Fox Hollow Murders on Hulu. It is about Herb Baumiester. It was just released last night! Whoa!

Audra Neurauter

What a nice surprise. I can listen with my morning coffee. Thanks!

Kay Vol

Haha, I've just patted myself on my back that I haven't killed anyone today. Thanks for putting that out there Lauren. It gave me a good laugh

Samantha Hughes

I love this. Israel Keyes is fascinating even though I don’t want him to be. I haven’t finished the episode, but in thinking about Keyes and evil, a soft spot for Keyes was his daughter. I’m curious what John thinks about that.

lemoncoffee

For anyone also interested in knowing more about Israel Keyes, there are two really good podcasts. One is True Crime Bullshit which focuses on a super in depth look at Keyes life and crimes. The other is called Somewhere In The Pines which focuses on finding Keyes buried caches. They’ve e actually found one that has been confirmed to Keyes.

Rebecca Hayes

Lol john...why aren't they your pen pals
