The swamp things were the original hosts, but in a more general sense, like before the Goa'uld discovered and started using humans.

And the normal situation in which SG1 is hunted by Apophis' death gliders, Ha'tak and Jaffa army is completely reversed : the powerful "God" becomes a fragile being begging for help and saying that he's scared. If all the Jaffa could see this, they would realize how mortal the Goa'uld are.
