Porn and Power Tools... What the—!?

Story time!

So, I use two different browsers to keep my life separate: Nick and the other guy (me IRL). My Nick browser is Firefox, and it has all the logins and cookies and history for the Nick side of my life.

This morning I was checking books and reviews on Amazon when I saw this—

Hold on, side note: have you seen the new book, Family Ties? If you have a minute, please write a quick review. These really help me out, and they help new readers. Here's the link: Family Ties on Amazon.

Okay, where were we? Right! Amazon.

So, I use Firefox for research too, in addition to everything else. And I was on Amazon this morning when it showed me its usual recommendations.

I had to laugh when I saw my browsing history: porn and power tools, and the odd cybersecurity/hacker book (kudos if you know who Violet Blue and Kevin Mitnick are).

Anyway, I thought I'd share the screen shot. It's a glimpse behind the curtain, so to speak.

That's all, just something fun to share.

Comments

I added it to my watch list when it came out, but I haven't watched it yet. Sadly, I know how I'll react (<em>not</em> positively).

If you haven't already been shown this...see 'The Social Dilemma'...on Netflix...these guys are discussing this very thing...i think

Those replies go to an unmonitored email account at Patreon (bingo@patreon.com). Sorry. You can't just Reply to mail like that. It's Patreon. (And most other sites, TBH.) Annoying, but it's how they work.

Nick Scipio

Nick, I had sent you a 'Thank you' reply to your original email from Patreon but that apparently didn't work. A t least I know you'll see this, so 'Thanks for the help.' I seem to be all square now.

True. But in this case, I'm logged in with different accounts, so it's storing my browsing history there, rather than by IP address. Also, I tend to shop Amazon on my phone or iPad when it's Me-IRL. They connect to the same VPN as my laptop, but they're different connections, so they'll have different outgoing IPs.

Nick Scipio

Same IP coming out of the house gets correlated by Amazon as well as probably some other sneaky shit. Have to swap VPN connections and maybe use a Tor browser for one of them to keep it separate.

Oh boy. Different strokes...

I saw a sex toy on DHGate, a Chinese knock off of the Chinese knock off site Wish, my brain stopped functioning for a few moments when I understood what it did.... think urethral vibrator.

Speaking of Violet Blue... she posted this while we were commenting here. https://www.patreon.com/posts/cybersecurity-8-41372853

Nick Scipio

She does. She also has a Patreon. Search and you'll find her. She sends out a weekly Cybersecurity Roundup, which is full of her usual snark and solid reporting.

Nick Scipio

I know, right! FWIW, they're <em>suggestions</em> based on my browsing history. I was actually searching for <em>Confessions of a Teenage Peanut Butter Freak</em>. I was talking to Big Ed about titles, and I used that as an example of a really good one. Amazon picked up on other porn from the era and suggested those.

Nick Scipio

Ok, now I need to use the Industrial strength Eyebleach....

I didn't know that. I just read about it on Wikipedia, though. And now I know a bit more than I did a few minutes ago. Yay us!

Nick Scipio

Violet Blue does wonderful cybersecurity writing...

Could have been worse, at least it wasn't power tool porn.

Kevin Mitnick and Grindhouse Hotties are quite the 80s/90s teen brain/over-the-top porn pairing

Ah yes, the reason a certain porn star had to change her stage name to "Noname Jane." 😉
