January's "Portrait In Nude Palette" - Chapter One
Added 2022-01-18 01:44:33 +0000 UTCWelcome - So begins our first FULL year of Mairin-Taj Caya's Figurative reference for creatives! I'm so thrilled to be here, on this journey with you all, with more patrons recently joined! Thank you for participating.
For our first month of the year, as the snows finally blow outside and the temperatures drop far below freezing, I'm offering a portraits series in beautiful pale nude tones. Portraits are a vital aspect of the figurative art practice, and they offer such diversity, learning, and interest.
See my previous studio post on "Portrait Studies" for three tips on working with portraits, which includes my saying that Likeness - how recognizable a face or figure is - comes through the individuation of structure. Meaning, to get at what makes someone look like themselves, as opposed to a contrived head, we've got to go beyond knowing how to measure out classical proportions and get into how the features reflect individuality through irregular, asymmetrical, rule-breaking distinctions. Observation is key, from the deeper layers, outwards.
This week I'm offering the first batch of portrait reference, and next week, same time, I'll be sharing batch two, or chapter two, as I distinguish in the titles. So more to come yet!
