patreon

Should posts become free to view for non-patrons?

I have always thought of it less as an incentive and more as a way for me to give something exclusive back to you for being here. It kind of felt like a secret club where I could let you in on my plans. But as I am no longer in need of the stable income and have more patrons than ever, it has begun to feel worse--like I'm trying to get some extra cash from everyone by making these posts paywalled. So I think it should change.

I want to cast a vote though.

(The Patreon discord channel would remain patron-only.)

dev logs / posts are the same thing

I feel like there's a lot of information that's not on patreon I'd like to be. I'm not really following chat in discords or anything so I get a lot of my game update news from this patreon, which has surprising gaps in information

I think it's fun to be able to pay for a chance at an inside scoop on your projects, while supporting you. With the virality of your game I assume some stuff is leaked anyway so I think releasing them later for free is fine and a good backlog for people to look at.

Jalen Cene

I think free after a couple weeks is the best option!

Chdata

Week or 2 would be the best in my opinion

Rukume

I sub to the Patreon to support someone that made an awesome game that's super cheap. I think a week lag time would adequately reward subs while also taking power from people who would just wholesale leak the contents of the Patreon.

How about lowering the monthly price? It's all up to you, I don't care what you choose

Piggy3590

a benefit of making them free to view would be people on youtube could reference and talk about them (which i imagine was previously not allowed)

Sushi

I don't think of you as greedy for taking in the patreon income, as I believed you've earned it and this is our way of showing gratitude and a physical form of our support and affirmations of your actions. I do agree with keeping the Patreon posts exclusive for a week or two, and then releasing it to public. That way it remains as a fun "sneak peek" and secret club while involving a larger community along the way.

As others have said, I agree with you that putting the posts behind a paywall feels like a special club where only people with disposable income can enjoy all this work. However I also think that a good portion of your patrons simply want to show their support to an extremely talented indie dev. I think 1-2 weeks after posting is a good spot and will still give casual enjoyers incentive to become a member aside from just the discord.

I fully believe that the community should be able to view information pertaining to the games when that information is available. It feels bad for all parties involved when it is restricted in the current manner. You, yourself feel wrong about it. Patrons feel wrong sharing information regarding the posts or referring the community to a pay wall to learn said information. Non-patrons feel that it is exploitative and greedy to require more payments for information regarding the games they bought.

Dragontoast

The dev logs for your games are an incredible insight into the work that went into it and more people being able to see it would be amazing, you should definitely publicize them if you'd like! I'm sure people will feel comfortable using them in video essays on the games development and stuff if they're no longer paywalled.

lolololol

I don’t mind either way. I feel anyone who subscribed, especially recently like myself, is subscribed BECAUSE they want to give you extra money. I don’t think that should make you feel bad. I’ve been enjoying insight into your development process.

Anthony

I think anything related to game development should be kept behind a paywall to incentivise people to donate to the cause of creating video games. But anything discussing the inspiration, background and such of video games you've made or are making, that isnt to do with the immediate future of your ideas, is fine to be free, alongside any general yapping besides game development. This is assuming, of course, that these points work with respects to your goal with patreon So perhaps the real question is, what is your intent with this platform? Everyone would rather not pay for something, but what do you want or need out of this deal? How does that all fit in with respects to your goals and such, so on and so forth

Xander_&_Yalnif

I mean the meaning of patron would be gone but like you say, it's perfectly fine to open it up if you don't need it anymore, one less task on your plate as well

bumBox

I'm not too sure to be honest. At the end of the day it's your call and I'm cool with whatever you see fit.
