似顔絵を描こう（Let's draw a portrait）

最近、やんごとなき事情により似顔絵を描けるようになる必要性が出てきました。色々と試してみて自分でも割と納得できる程度の似顔絵が描けるようになったので、ここでは自分がどのようにして似顔絵を描いたかについて書いてみようと思います。

Recently, due to unavoidable circumstances, the need to be able to draw portraits has arisen. After trying various methods, I was able to draw a rather satisfactory portrait of myself, so I will write about how I drew my portrait here.

１．私が描くならどんな似顔絵になる？（What kind of portrait would I draw?）

まず、私はデフォルメの強く効いたキャラクターしかほぼ描いたことがありません。目は大きく、顔は丸い。体に比べて頭も非常に大きい。最近は男性キャラクターを描く機会もありましたが、それでも女性キャラクターを描くことの方がはるかに多いです。似顔絵を描くなら老若男女を問わず描ける必要がありますが、今の私の人物の描き方では対応できません。さて困った。

First of all, I have drawn almost only strongly deformed characters. Their eyes are large and their faces are round. Their heads are also very large compared to their bodies. Recently I have had the opportunity to draw male characters, but even so, I draw female characters far more often. If I want to draw portraits, I need to be able to draw both men and women, young and old, but the way I draw people now, I cannot cope with this. Now I am in trouble.

そこで、Adobeが提供している画像生成AIサービスの「Adobe Firefly」を使ってみることにしました。とはいえ、生成された画像をそのまま成果物として使うわけではありません。Adobe Fireflyでは、生成すべき画像の参照元として画像データを取り込むことができます。そこで、人物写真と私の描くキャラクターの両方を参照させて画像を生成することで、「私が似顔絵を描くならどんな描き方になるか？」を知る手掛かりになるのではないかと考えたのです。

So I decided to try Adobe Firefly, an image generation AI service provided by Adobe. However, the generated images are not used as-is as deliverables. Adobe Firefly can import image data as a reference source for the images to be generated. So, I thought that by generating images with references to both the portraits and the characters I would draw, it would give a clue as to how I would draw the portraits.

左側はこれから似顔絵を描く人物の写真で、Adobe Stockにあった素材です。右側は参照すべき私の絵柄として作成した男性キャラクター画像です。髪や目の色に深い意味はないのですが、元の写真の人物と全く異なる色にすることで、生成された画像に自分の絵の影響がどのくらい出ているかを確認するのには良いかもしれません。また、顔の描き方だけ分かればいいので服は着せていません。変な影響が出ても困りますし。

On the left is a photo of the person I will be portraying, material from Adobe Stock. On the right is an image of a male character I created as a reference for my drawing. There is no deep meaning in the color of the hair and eyes, but it might be good to check how much the influence of my drawing is on the generated image by making the color completely different from that of the person in the original photo. Also, I did not dress them, as I only need to know how to draw their faces. I don't want any strange influences.

生成してみると、こんな感じのものが出来上がりました。人物写真と私の絵柄の中間あたりのようなキャラクターになりました。ただ、似顔絵というにはあんまり似ていません。この後、私の絵柄の影響度を上げたり下げたりして試してみたのですが、いまいちピンとくるものにはなりませんでした。

When I generated it, I got something like this. The character is somewhere between a portrait photo and my drawing. However, it does not look much like a portrait. After this, I tried increasing and decreasing the influence of my drawing, but I could not get it to look quite right.

そこで、出力された画像から、私の絵柄に取り入れられそうな要素を探し、似顔絵としての方向性を決めることにしました。

So, I decided to look for elements from the output image that I could incorporate into my drawing and decide on the direction I wanted to take as a portrait.

２．抑えるべきポイントを探してみる（Let's look for points to keep in mind）

生成した画像から、似顔絵を描くにあたり抑えておくべき事項としては以下のようなものが考えられました。

・目の形（目の開き具合や傾き）を再現し、大きさは控えめに

・顔の色、顔の輪郭の形は大きく変えない

・鼻筋の影や鼻の穴を描く

・唇はしっかり描く

・シワやほうれい線も描く

Based on the images generated, the following items were considered to be important to keep in mind when drawing the portraits.

・Reproduce the eye shape (eye opening and tilt) and keep the size modest

・Not significantly change the color of the face or the shape of the facial contours

・Draw the shadow of the bridge of the nose and the nostrils

・Draw lips properly

・Draw wrinkles and nasolabial folds as well

おおよそこんなところでしょうか。これを元に、私の元の絵柄から変えるべきところは変えて似顔絵を描いていきます。似顔絵というと、その人の顔の特徴を大きく誇張して描かれることもありますが、とりあえずはそういった誇張表現は控えめに、まずは似顔絵として似せることを最優先にしました。

This is about right. Based on this, I will draw a portrait, changing what needs to be changed from my original design. In some cases, portraits are drawn by exaggerating the features of a person's face, but for now, I kept such exaggerations to a minimum and gave top priority to making the portrait look like the person it portrays.

そんなわけで、抑えるべきポイントを意識しながら描いたのがこの似顔絵です。どうでしょう、まあまあ似ているのではないでしょうか。よく観察し、特徴を捉え、自分の絵柄に落とし込む。よくよく考えれば、私が依頼者さんからキャラクターをお借りして描いている時と考え方はあまり変わりませんでした。

So, I drew this portrait while being aware of the points to keep in mind. What do you think? I think the resemblance is so-so. I observed carefully, captured the features, and incorporated them into my drawing. When I think about it again, my approach was not so different from when I borrowed a character from a client and drew it.

３．色々描いてみる（Let's draw various people）

さて、これで自分なりの似顔絵の描き方が決まり、コツを掴むことができたので、何人分か似顔絵を描いてみました。普段の私のキャラクターの描き方からはだいぶ離れていますが、老若男女さまざまな人物を描くことを考えれば、よい落としどころといえるかもしれません。これからも似顔絵をちょくちょく練習してみようと思います。いやはや、やってみれば何とかなるものですね。

Now that I have decided on my own way of drawing portraits and have gotten the hang of it, I have drawn portraits of several people. It is quite a departure from my usual way of drawing characters, but considering that I draw people of all ages and genders, I think it is a good place to start. I will try to practice portraits more often in the future. Well, if you give it a try, you can get by.
